Speaker box

In my MP5 I got a Sony Explode amp and 1 sub in a sealed box. The systems sounds good but when I open the doors or role down all my windows it sounds 10xs better. Do I need a ported box or a bigger sealed box?Thanks

HHmmmh. Does it sound 'boomy' with the car buttoned up? Try reversing the phase (switch pos/neg speaker wires at the box) and listen if it cuts the 'over-boom'.

Porting the box isn't as easy as taking a sawzall and cutting a hole...

Try filling the box with pink attic insulation - it would damp any standing waves and is worth a try before spending ca$h for a new box...

It sounds good with everything closed but as soon as I open the door is sounds like someone hit the loud button and it sounds better. I know there is more to just drilling a hole in a box to make it "ported". I am not a complet idiot :cool:

It sounds better because there is more room for the sound waves to travel. Another example is facing a sub (firing forward) as oppose to rear firing subs. You get better bass response firing it towards the rear. Even in my sedan, the bass sounds a little louder with the windows down, just laws of physics I guess. A ported enclosure will give you more bass response as oppose to a sealed enclosure. Make sure the port's length is optimal for the subwoofer and it will sound louder.

Team Player - i wasn't saying you were - most people have no idea that you have to match the Thiele parameters, Q, etc, of a sub then load the dimensions of the box and have a computer generate the data you need.

(This is why i only build sealed boxes - not as complex/sound reasonably good :P )

;peace;

Its all good I wasnt pissed or anything :bt:

I still want to try a ported box, cause the bass I get with the door open is the bass I want.
