Space saving bass
 

I was toying with the notion of a sub for my Pro5, but I don't want to spend a whole lot of money, nor do I want to sacrifice a lot of space. I'm not real big on bass- I just want somethin to supplement the regular speakers. The obvious solution seems to be a tube, but I'd like to find something more compact. I know Pioneer used to make a sub that fit inside your spare tire- anyone have any experience with these or have any other suggestions?

Expensive but worth it.

Infinity's Basslink is a space saving option for added low end to the factory system. Kicker also makes a self powered tube like sub that has a flat bottom. The local dealer told me that with the shape and being carpeted, you don't have to anchor them in the trunk and they stay put. They also have a quick disconnect wiring harness, so you can just unclip the unit and take it out of the trunk if you need the space

Cost for the Kicker unit was about $350 retail. The Basslink is available cheap on Ebay and retails for $399 at Circuit City.

Both would need wiring for power and speaker connections, if you don't plan to do that yourself.

After researching these, I opted for a 10" sub in a sealed enclosure. Fortunately for me, the local dealer didn't have a 10" in stock and upgraded me to a 12 for the same price. This provides everything from mild augmentation to real thump. I am pleased and ended up spending less than either of the other 2 options I looked at.

Once you get solid bottom end in your system, you know what you are missing with the standard speakers. I got hooked from my home theater sub, and just did not want to settle for less in the car.

this JL is an awsome lil sub and is easy to take out and put back in. They also make a JL10w04 in a premouted carpeted box, which wont take up that much room either. it will sound a hell of alot better than the 8, not too much louder, but will look better. approx $169.99 retail value. TWEETER co. sells em.

It is a sub that you can get from for a Subaru that fits under the seat -120 watts

8" sub designed for small box <0.5 cu ft. I have older Alpine(XR series)sub, it worked very well in tiny sealed box.
After all-you can always unhook the box and leave it at home if you need extra space.

Depending on how much you want to spend. You can get a decent shop to do a fiberglass enclosure in the driver side of the trunk. I've done a mould of that area already but haven't finished it as I got something else. That won't really take up any space & you still have access to your spare. You can probably get around 0.4-0.5 cu. ft in there which would be good enough for a decent 8" sub.

I will be using the Kenwood Woox powered sub. It is really tiny, and I plan on mounting it underneath the passenger seat (it will fit...barely). This won't be the best option for SQ or thumping, but all I want is some sub bass to make up for the fact that I don't have a full setup like in my other car. Plus, this option takes up zero usable space, and is invisible from outside the car. I haven't installed it the P5 yet, but I tried it in my other car, and I thought it was pretty decent, especially considering the size. Plus, it will be really close to my ears compared to the out in the back setup like most people have, so less power will be needed to give the same perception of sound at most normal volume levels.

I had one of those Pioneer in the spare subs, and it was not very good. It was a bandpass type of thing with a 6 inch speaker and while it would get moderately loud, it came at the expense of LOTS of port noise. Plus, it won't fit in the well of the P5 (I tried already...). I had that under the seat of my 1970 Chev pickup (I couldn't hear port noise over the engine, the exhaust, road noise....), so it was OK for that application, especially since I got it cheap.

that kenwood is on crutchfield for $220, and looks real good, guess i'll have to get 1.

I thought the wOOx thing was interesting, too - the small woofer and passive radiator thing and all - just might sound pretty good.

I like to thump a bit more (500 watts to a 10" RF Punch HX2 - soon to 'glass a new enclosure), but for just adding a little depth to the bass, I'd love to hear how that wOOx sounds....

I will let everyone know how it turns out. Unfortunately, finding the time to install the darn thing has been an issue. I tried it out briefly in my other car, as I said, and I was pleasantly surprised. Seems to put out decent sound for the space it takes up. I didn't think it was inexpensive for what you got, but that other article you referred to seemed to think it was a pretty good deal.

My brief comparison was between the woox and my kicker solobaric (the round kind, 8") running about 300W RMS, and SQ wise, I thought they were pretty close. The woox has a remote for the crossover frequency and level too, which is a really nice feature.

Wow, SQ comparable to an 8" sub powered by a 300W amp? That's a pretty strong thing to say about such a small box. I found some more reviews on epinions, though, and they agree that it's good.
