Shifter Knobs

How easily do MoMo shift knobs install into an sedan? I am very interested in getting an aftermarket knob however, I don't want to have to drill or anything.

Does anyone have a Momo, or any other nice knobs installed they can tell me about. I know about the voodoo knob, it looks really nice too, but I am interested in other knobs. How they look, how they feel, ease of install and whether they are snug with the leather boot or not.

I have an Ichibahn shift knob in my car which uses a similar type of setup to momo in which you place a rubber sleeve over the rod and then screw the knob into place with an allen key. The only problem i encountered was that about a third of the way down the rod is a big ass plastic sleeve which essentially holds the shift boot up. I'm not sure if you can take this off but it wasn't a problem with the shift knob i'm using. You should check though before you get the momo.

i don't think you should even consider any thing other than the voodoo. best mod i have ever made to any of my cars. PLUS: the simplest to install. 1. unscrew stock knob. 2. screw on voodoo knob. DONE! now DO IT! :D

I like the voodoo, do you order it online? How can I get it in Canada? Also my only concern with it is the round racing style ball shifter may looke a bit strange since I don't have a short shifter or anything.

If you have a voodoo can you post a picture?

here is a picture of my polished magnum knob:

i think it looks great, and i am only waiting to get a short shift kit to make it look better! :D

Hey Nik,
That shifter looks nice. I have two questions for you though...how much bigger does the magnum look compared to the regular knob, and did you try fitting it with the stock shift boot? I noticed you have a custom one, but that might be a bit out of my league.

njaremka August-8th-2002 01:09 PM

to be honest with you, my shift boot isn't really a custom one as it is custom 'modified' to work with the knob. at the top of the shift boot there is a plastic ring glued to the vinyl. i removed that thing, turned the boot inside out, and zip-tied it to the shifter shaft. then i put a small washer onto the shaft, and screwed the knob down tight.

as for the difference in size, i am not sure how it feels, but the standard voodoo know is 1-7/8" diameter and the magnum is 2" diameter. not much to look at, but if you held both you might notice a difference. i bought the magnum because i wanted the bigger one.

Nik,
Thanks for all the help, you have been a great source of information. Thanks to all...I think I am going for the Voodoo Spun Aluminum Knob, I like the duller finish of it over the polished one. I think it will look goot with the "aluminum" accents on the dash of the car. I am thinking of getting some black framed, aluminum racing pedal covers as well...give the car a nice look on the inside without having to do too much, or drop too much doe.

When I'm done I'll post some pictures.

I myself got a voodoo knob too, and got to admit this is a great little piece of work. Mine is a normal knob smooth black, and I got it personnalized by the knobmeister http://www.knobmeister.com/

It looks great.
As for the booth, I used the stock one, the only thing I did was to add a black rubber ring to fill the space btween the knob and the plastic thing unger the top of the booth.

i should, jeez! :D

Yeah we should all write to Voodoo and get them to make him an official spokesperson or something...at least he should get some free stuff!

I found a guy relatively close to my house that sells these knobs from his house, he also has an extra ring to close the gap between the boot and the knob. This would be my first after market purchase and I am a bit leery of getting myself in too deep, or getting something that looks silly. You guys have all been re-assuring.

So what do you think spun or polished? I realize that spun ends up polished after a while but any suggestions on what looks better?

i was going to go with the spun and then decided on the pearl.
1) the knob won't end up polished then. (insert polishing knob joke here)
2) i'm hoping it more closely matches the silvery accents in the car.

i'll know tomorrow when the little FedEx fairies arrive.

I really like the pearl one as well, but in the interest of saving money I decided against it. It looks like those pictures are of a polished one and it looks really nice too.

If you get a chance to take some pics of your new knob (I know, I know...) can you post them. I want to see what it looks like, especially if you are using the stock boot.

Don't forget about the mazdaspeed shift knob. They will fit the sedan just great. Here look at mine:

Have a good one.
