Shifter Boot
 

I'm going to installing a MSP shifter to replace my stock unit and just wondering how much shorter of a boot do I need to order and should I throw in the Corksport Bronze oil bushings while I'm at it?

Well, I have the full Kartboy setup and it's pretty short...and I'm using the stock boot.
It's a bit too 'bunched up'. If you really want it to look nice you might wanna check out Redline Goods. I don't know if they still make 'em for the Protege but they were/are pretty nice.

I've heard good things about the bronze oil bushings. But I <3 my Kartboy setup.

I hear the Kartboy is nice but very hard to find, just bought the MSP one. Yes Redline was the company I was going to order it from, thanks.

3" shorter. I have an MSP shift lever and a Redline boot.

You can still get the bushings directly from Kartboy I am pretty sure but
Tom discontinued the Protege shifter. They are not making much at all these days.
Just Subie stuff iirc (or Mitsu, one or the other...)

You can also get Nyloil bushings at stagefourmotorsports.com.

You can't get the kartboy bushings shipped to canada when buying them directly.

I know because I had to smuggle kartboy exhaust hangers across the border (true story)

Thanks Josh, how do you like your shifter? Thanks for the bushing heads up too. Also picked up a Mazdaspeed engine cover so have to fab up some brackets.

I like! The polyurethane bushings make it notchier but a heavy shift knob smooths out the shifting.

That's why I went with the greddy knob. It's small but it's solid copper (IIRC it's copper.. haven't taken it off in a while).

I bought mine there years ago but it looks like they are getting rid of shift knobs entirely.. they don't stock the right size anymore, and that's the only greddy knob they have !

Cool guys I might order the AutoEXE carbon knob and the Nyoil complete kit. Not sure on the weight though.

my guess is the carbon knob is quite light, but it shouldn't be worse than stock. If you haven't driven a rod-actuated manual transmission (as opposed to a cable actuated like the Mazda3/6/etc and most other car that are around the age our ours) with a short throw shifter and poly bushings, just keep this in mind: it'll get better. At first it'll feel like "omg wow I have to use a lot of force" but you'll get used to it after a week or two. It feels so good, you just feel so "horse and rider as one" to quote Mazda :)

Oh thanks for that kansei. In fact when I test drove the new MS 3 the tranny was quite notchy and quite a bit different so will just take some getting use to. I'll add the bushings and boot first and just use my stock leather one then if it needs a weighted knob.

The MS3 shifter feels like a toy compared to a protege with a short throw.

mainly because it is a cable shifter.. it just never feels as direct.

I have installed a TWR short shifter w/bushings in my Speed6. It has a cable shifter, but the thing is awesome. Getting into the Protege after driving it feels like I have a 6" throw (and that is with a B&M in the Pro). So it is possible to have a good feel with a short throw on a cable shifter.
