Rear Speaker installation
 

Ok, this is the first time im installing speakers, so im new at this. I just got some pioneer speakers off of my friends car cuz he didnt want them anymore and since my 2002 mazda protege es sedan didnt come with any rear speakers i was hoping i could pop my friends in. now i took off the door panel and all and they fit but theres no wiring in the door and i dont know where i should lead or splice the wires into. I'm getting an amp but that will only be able to power the subs that are coming in. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do with the rear speakers, it would help me out a lot.

why don't you mount them in the rear deck?

I would advise against mounting them in the rear door. I have a 2003 ES, and the sound is great from the 6x9's in the rear deck. If you choose to mount a set of speakers in the rear doors insted of the rear deck, you will suffer 2 problems - 1. Lack of high end definition 2. Not enough low frequency effects (bass). In my wife's 2003 P5 (speakers in the doors - no rear deck), Mazda fixed the second problem by adding a spare tire mounted subwoofer, but the lack of musical definition really sucks. The speaker holes in the rear doors only accomodate a 5 1/4" speaker. Unless you really want to go high end and install a component set (will require some drilling of the door panel), I would advise against it. Put the 6x9's in the rear deck.

Alright thanks for your input, i already have speakers in the rear deck, there the stock ones but i dont know whether i should put my friends in, there nothing special, some really old pioneer speakers. But thanks anyway.

You might give a try to installing some new speakers in the stock locations. I installed a new set of Pioneer's all the way around, and it really woke up the sound. I used TS-D690R's for the rear, and a set of TS-C160r's for the fronts (had to use an adapter though) and coated the doors and rear deck with Dynamat Xtreme. Sounds good.

good deal, i'll look into it, but do you think the Dynamat Xtreme is essential ir do you think i could go without it, and if you think i should use it about how much would it run me for?

dynamat will kill road noise, improve bass response, deaden vibrations caused by the flexing of a speaker, and ultimately help you produce a better sound. although pricey for any sound deadener, it's well worth the trouble. now your car came with NO rear speakers? i mean, i've heard of economy, but thats bullshit, any sound coming from a compact sedan should be quadraphonic (spelling is horrible this morning). you need some sort of rear fill. if the speakers you got of your friend will fit into your front doors, throw them in by all means and invest on a set of 6x9's for your rear deck. and don't be afraid, it's easy as hell to do and plenty of people on here are willing to help. and even if it's still not your forte and you have some money to spare, shell out some money and have a pro or one of your buddies install them

Well, Mazdafied, if you look on eBay, you can get a Dynamat Xtreme bulk pack for less than $100 (Retail price $250). It just doesn't help with the stereo, it also helps with the road noise that plagues our cars, just like demoninvictus said. I have the front speakers with A-pillar mounted tweeters which they added in 2003. I dont think the 2002 has that, so Pioneer makes a great 6x8 that fits the front - TS-D680R. (I already mentioned the 6x9) Both are listing on eBay for about $85 for each pair.

Lets see here. The sedan has 6x9 rears that will produce better sound than what would fit in the rear doors. The doors have speaker connections because the rear doors are a common part between the sedan and the P5. Really the higher location on the rear window deck is a superior location to the door anyway for sound dispersion. I thought of the rear doors only in terms of Dolby Digital purposes, but I am not a video freak like some. I try to watch the road when driving... :p
Deadening is useful stuff, but not vital. I see the biggest gain is if you have panels removed to install speakers, why not kill two birds with one stone? ;) Check www.b-quiet.com, they sell products everybit as good as the dynamat products for less. I have done several complete interior sound deadening projects with B-quiet, and have been very impressed. Right now I am in the process of deadening the whole interior of the Mazdaspeed from the firewall to the tail lights with thier products. Good Stuff!
The point that any level of replacement speaker will be better than stock should be taken to heart. Go listen to as many different brands as you can find, discover speakers you like the sound of and then hit the internet and E-Bay. Speakers need not cost a fortune and will give you a nice return for the investment in improved sound.

i DO have speakers in the rear deck just not the dorr but as jaredspangler i wont put any into the rear doors. Im thinking about getting the Dynamat Xtreme as soon as i get some new speakers. You guys got any suggestions on what kind of speakers i should be getting for the front doors and rear deck, i want something good but i dont want it to be too pricey. Also should i run those to an amp or just leave them hooked up to the stock stereo. I will be getting a 2 12" or 3 10" subs w/ box amp and stereo all sony or pioneer, i don;t know yet but i dont have a choice cuz im getting it as a present from all my buddies and i just heard some things that leaked out. But let me know your opinion on those speakers.

I am always big on getting speakers YOU like the sound of. In the Chicago area there are many shops and stores you could go listen to various brands in.
To a degree what type and size will depend on how much work you are willing to do during an install.
Focus on the fronts first. Drop in size is 5x7/6x8. With an adaptor you can do 5.25 no problem and with a bit of work some 6.5 inch will fit. If you are willing to work a touch more on the install, look into components, a seperate mid and tweeter set. They will produce better sound, and allow flexability regarding the install location of the tweeter, which can help the front soundstage.
Generally best rule of thumb would be to find a similar model of speaker from the same manufacturer for the rear. It is more likely to sonicaly match the fronts you like. the back is a 6x9, but with adaptors smaller speakers such as 6.5 can be fitted there also.
But find speakers YOU like the sound of, don't take our word for what is good in your price range. The sound of speakers is subjective- what sound good to me make sound like dogs howling to you! ;)
If you are going to get sub and amp them, then sooner or later will be looking at amping the cabin speakers- they will be drown out by the bass so all that is heard is the thud thud thud with no vocals.
So go spend some time sounding out speakers, it can be a fun thing to do!
