radar detector

are there any concealed radar decetors out there on the market (so you don't have to stick a giant thing on the windshield)

You can consider the remote detectors where the antenna horn is installed under the bumper or behind the grille and all that you see is a small control head.

Here's a site that compares 5 different units.

Craig Peterson's advice has always been a touch questionable to me. He makes his living by being a paid consultant to manufactures of car radar detection equipment. And Surprise- the companies he has been a paid consultant to seem to end up at the top of the heap in test on his site, and companies who have not hired him, or rebuked his offers of consultation seem to end up at the low end of his test.
His site does offer at least information regarding the various brands out there, but the conclusions should be veiwed as dubious at best.
Some folks like Car and Driver and the Corvette Club newletters have more nuteral non finanically motovated test. In general, the "hidden" units are less effective and cost way way more.

My question is do they have one that actually works worth a crap? I have owned an Escort top end model and the thing picked up false alarms like crazy. I had problems with the power cord and sent it in for $50 (it was out of warranty). They sent it back with a new one, but it wasn't the cord, but the piece it plugged in to (which I explained). They would not look at it again unless I sunk more money ($50) to have it looked at (not even a 30 day warranty on the so called repaired unit). I was turned off by it turning off without any indication of it doing so. I would pass a cop on the highway, look at the radar detector and the power light is out! So I purchased a BEL 840i which was top notch at the time using Desert Storm type of technology in radar detection (according to articles in Car Audio). It works great, but never warned me of "instant on" radar detectors it claimed to be able to pick up afar. I still have it in a box some where in my apartment. I just don't do much speeding like I used to. I may go 5 miles over the limit in the city or 10 hwy. Every one here in SC drives slow as shit and you can never get around them, so what's the point. Sorry to rant so much on this post:D
