Rack accessories (kayaking)
Check out my new roof accessory! Who needs an SUV? :bt:
http://students.washington.edu/billcat/kayakcar1.jpg http://students.washington.edu/billcat/kayakcar2.jpg http://students.washington.edu/billcat/kayakcar3.jpg It's a 19ft composite touring kayak. Only 50lbs, but 19ft sure makes this car look small. When I go out on the water I stow the Protege in the aft hatch. :D Here's the equipment to carry it: Thule Set-to-go Saddles (#878), two pairs Thule Quickdray ratcheting tie-downs (#855) It's a beast to get on the car, but once it's strapped down it holds firm. Protege handles the weight well too, just have to concentrate on taking those corners slower. |
I had the ability to put two kayaks and two bikes on my old 01' ES2.0 with my thule rack. With the factory rack on my P5 now I think I am only going to be able to get either one set or the other. I would be able to remove the factory rack and use my thule rack, but i am probably not going to do that. I was able to custon attach my thule kayak stacker w/$10 parts from home depot. The problem is that the rack on the P5 is not that wide and it is going to be difficult to attach my bike racks w/out spending lots of money. I have a rack I can attach to the back to hold my bikes.
Your set-up looks nice. My boats at 13 feet so are much shorter than yours. I will have to put my boats on my car and get some pics up...... |
Just an update to anyone else who might be looking for a kayak carrier like this. It holds the boats great, very secure. Still no problems.
Today on my way home I had a guy run a very red light right in front of me. I made a hard panic stop, tires screeching (gotta love the brakes on this car) and missed him by less than a foot. The kayak nosed down a little and the stern line tightened, but it didnt go anywhere. |
