Question on speakers in the Mp3
 

I have an '02 ES. I want to upgrade the speakers in the cra and I am not an audiophile nor do I want to shake my fillings out. I just want clearer, crisper sound without bastardizing the interior. I was told by the dealership that the Mp3 speakers are direct replacements for mine.

So, my question is, are these Kenwoods that good?

Second, can anyone confirm the Mp3 speakers being direct replacements for the '02 ES?

I searched Crutchfield and the Kenwoods do have the widest sound range in their price region. The dealer prices are a bit steep though. It's about 119 for the fronts and 129 for the rears.

Are you going to use the factory head unit?

Yes. Down the road I might, and it's only a possibility, add an amp. But, honestly, I doubt it. I'll probably do the exhaust, springs, struts and tower bar first. So, even if I did change it, it would be quite some time.

Just go on crutchfield or grab a catalog, they have a chart that will list all your stock speaker sizes. Once you know that just order any speaker you want. As long as it is the same size it should work fine. Yeah, Kenwoods are great, especially the excelon series. Infinity's are good too.

Screw paying dealer prices hehe.

All Protégés except the Protégé 5 use 5x7 front speakers and 6x9 rear speakers, so yes the Kenwood speakers in the MP3 will fit. I prefer MB quarts personally, but every humans hearing is different. It's much more difficult for someone to recommend speakers to another person than it is to recommend other electronic components. The one thing I can tell you if you plan on using the stock receiver is you will be better off all things being equal with more sensitive speakers. The amp in the stock receiver, and almost any internal car stereo amp for that matter, is of marginal quality. That means the more you turn up the gain (volume) on the amp, the more distortion reaches the speakers. One to reduce this is getting more sensitive speakers which produce more volume with less power. Sensitivity is measure in decibels (DB), the higher the number, the more sensitive the speaker.

Would the stock receiver have enough power to power component speakers?

the front speakers are 6 1/2s aren't they?

not the stock headunit would not be powerful enough to run a component i wouldnt even run a component of an aftermarket unit i would definitley buy and amp to run them

I agree. Down the road i will definitely get an amp. i'm just upgrading piece by piece. and i kinda like the look of the stock unit.
