problem with amp

i seem to have a problem with my amp... everytime i turn the voulme up high on the headunit... the amp would go into protection mode and turn itself off....

the set up i am running is a kenwood headunit with the "non-fading rear output" connected to the amP via RCA cables (and remote control thing)... and the amp running 1 x 600W sub...

amp is 4 channel 1200W with 2x600W bridged.....

what happens is everytime i play a song which is quite bassy the amp turns itself off (the green light goes off and red one comes on).... usually this turns off when i play RnB (ludacris - virgo) at about 11 on the sound scale on headunit... but i put my friends techno CD in and it plays that kinda music till about 18 on the scale before turning off.... i am utterly stumped at whas happening....

also should mention i tested the amp + sub set up with my Ipod connected to it through RCA and it pumped out much more bass than what it does through the head unit (dont get me wrong it still does pump good but just confuzed as to whas goin on)

anyone have ANY idea as to whats happening???

i checked the wiring over and over and everything is in order.... :S is my amp just screwed up??

i really hope that made sense.. and you guys can help me out.....

what brand and what gauge ground wire are you useing?

It might not be your amp. See if you can trade amps with a friend. It could be the head that is causing it to stop. If your buddy can play it with no problem then its the head. Using the Ipod you cant tell because the Ipod doesn't put out the same watts as the deck. It sounds like the higher power is shutting it off. But I'm no expert.

i dono what gauge wire i am using... but i got it with the amp (it came with a wiring kit)... its chunky hehehe.....

i will try swappin it with a friends amp and see how it goes.....

What sub?
If it is 4ohm and the amp is bridged - it may be below the threshold <2ohm - check the amp's direction book for 'what ohms it is stable down to'.

hey guys i tried the impedence test and it was fine.... i found the problem with it and now its fixed and pumpin more than ever hehe....

i dont know if me playin with it too much and got lucky but.... after i matched the low pass frequency on the head unit with that of the amp it started working... i dont think this was the problem... i porbably just played with the settings enuff and got lucky somewhere hehe

NEXT QUESIONS: ghowd damnn it rattles back there in the boot LOL... how much sound dead'nin do i have to put back there??

alex_aha Apr 18, 2005 08:32 PM

lol, it all depends on whats rattling, if your trunk sounds like can full of beans - get yourself Dynamat trunk kit, it worked for me in my first system ... If its your rear panel and third brake light thats rattling get yourself some adhesive weatherstrips and attach it under those plastic parts....

Go out and get some carpet foam and sit it in the corners of the back deck. My rattle is gone. But don't put to much, because if you do then the 3rd light hits the window.
