Paint Job ????
 

ok guys correct me if im not in the right thread.....

I am gonna make a paintjob on my protege '90 it has the unique gray paint, they made it only for that year....
Anyways, I want to paint it black, now I don't have the thousands dollars it take to let a bodyshop paint it.

What I was thinking is to paint the entire car with Canadian Tire's touch up spray paint.... I mean, they sell paint in spray to repair your paint like if you do a rust job. Now i'm wondering what will it look?

I have a lot of patience... so that's not a problem... What I wanna know is, if I take the time to do it well, what will the result be?

so, what is the difference between that and proffesional??? what make you say its not professinal when you look at it ? is it because you see that there is more spray somewhere and less somewhere else...... or the quality of the paint suck .. or ... well what?

it will probably look pretty crappy...NOTHING like the paint job that came on the car....the ONLY time I would suggest painting a car out of a can like that, is if its a real junker and you just wanted to cover up the metal so it won't rust.

for starters, when a REAL PROFESSIONAL paints your car its done in a paint booth...where all the air is filtered and there is NO DUST at all...or any other contaminate in the air that can land on the wet paint and cause a flaw. also the paint is put into a gun and sprayed with a constant regulated presure...in a can....the presure will not be constant....it drops as the can empties. and the quality of the paint you will get in that can is NOT top notch by any means....

if you want your car to look good.....then start saving your loonies and toonies.....

if you don't care what it looks like.....get the spray cans.

if I sand my car before I get it to the body shop, do you think I'm gonna have a better price?

I think you would if you get the body work done first. But as I keep saying. Get the pros to do it. Any mistake you make you have to live with.

Prep work like sanding and any body work is the true backbone of a new paint job.....the best painter in the world can shoot a car, and if the prep work wasn't done properly the finished product can suck. it could even start peeling a short time afterwards.....

and if YOU do all the prep work...and then have the shop shoot it to save a few bucks...then something goes wrong later....they can always blame it on YOUR prep work...or at least try to and end up giving you a big hastle.

To do this right. Do your homework, ask around, see what kind of work different shops in your area does, and the quality of the finished product....the BEST advertising a shop like this can have is a satisfied customer....seek them out.

First is your car one color? Does it have any primer spots on it? Does any metal show thru? Was the primer on your car from a spray can?

I dont know of any shops that will spray your car if you do the prep on it.
If you have the money and can find the color you want as a second or what not.
If your car is in one color just faded, you can just get out some wet 600 grit paper and sand all spots to a dull finish, once you have completed that I would get a green scotch brite pad from a auto paint store and hit up all the little cracks and crevices. If your car was white get some clorox powder or similar product and scotch brite the whole car again.
You can rent a paint gun from the shop most times. Or you could even rent the both and a gun from some smaller shops. Just make sure that the car has no dirt in the cracks and undercarrage or water dripping.
You dont have to use a booth to paint your car. You can just plastic off the Garage get a fan and blow it out from the mini booth, and wet the floor nicely. To get the dust to stay off the car and go to a more suitable location you can get a chain and get it on the frame underside of the car and put it out and to the sides of the car attracting dust.
I would not reccomend trying this on the car righ off the bat. I would practice on some scrap metal. not paper or cardboard. Since this would be your first time dont bother with the best paint out there just get some cheap base clear paint. This way if you run the paint you can just use a wet peice of 600 and some wax remover as the water to smooth out a run or a drip or some dirt that was too big. The last coat of Color and the last coat of clear are the most important. Make sure and put at least 3 color coats for coverage and to hide tiger strips, and 2-4 coats of clear.

do all the prep work yourself, and take it to maaco, maaco actually does good paint jobs, for 200 bucks you can have a decient paint job.

IMO Maaco is cheap but sucks

A paint job is really all about how you prep the area and how well you take care of it. All paints have UV protection some more then others. If you only wash it once a year and dont wake it then yes it will fade, if you wax it every couple of weeks with a hand polish then it will last.
