new speakers

hi everyone, i recently purchased a new protege, i like the stereo, but it just doesn't have quite enough juice for me, i like the punchyness of the bass but i want a little more low end, but nothing like a sub woofer. so here's my question, i've read on posts that the stock hu only puts out like 10 watts or something like that per channel, so would it be dumb to go to a store and buy like 100 watt or something like that speakers with the hope that they would give me more bass? i think eventually i'll have to put an amp in to get more power to the speakers but in the meantime i was hoping just to replace some speakers. do you think it will make enough difference? my mom's 99 protege has great bass, if i could get it to sound like that i would be more than happy

I'm 100% with blueLEDz

changing the head unit and the factory speakers was one of the first things I did and noticed a huge difference. The rear door panels don't come with speakers on my 99 LX but have spaces for them so I changed the factory speakers and added two more 6 1/2" (plus added 1" tweets). But just changing the factory deck and factory speakers will produce a noticeable difference. My girl's 93 pro has a Kenwood deck and four memphis two way speakers to replace the factory. Big difference!

For like the first 7 months of having my car I didnt replace the speakers, just the HU. I was very satisfied with just that. The stock HU sounded like garbage. Of course now that I got more $$ rolling in I got better speakers.
