The 'new' deck (w/ pics)
 

I just pulled the deck out of my other vehicle in anticpation of the transplant in to the protege.
Here are two pics of the deck and the existing harness.

My question is about hooking up the harness to the protege, do I need that existing harness or would the Best Kits or Scosche harness replace that. I am a little confused on whether the new harness connects directly from the protege to the deck or wether it goes from the protege-new harness-old harness-deck.

So basically i am asking if I need a new harness for the deck along with the Best Kits or Scosche harness or if the BK or Scosche replaces everything.

If that is the harness that plugs into a socket on the back of the deck what you need to do is buy the Best or Scosche or metra harness for the Protege. You would wire up the harnesses together (look for Sir Nukes pin out thread [or many others here] for info as to what wire color is what in the car). When you're done you will end up with a harnes that has plugs on both ends. Plug the car end into the harness plug in the dash, plug the other into the back of the HU. Install the HU into the dash. Done!

Yes, that picture is of the harness that plugs into the HU.

So if i get what you are saying.. Take the existing harness and put all the loose wire into the new Scosche (or whatever) harness then plug the other end of the Scosche into the protege harness?

So if i was to take that HU and the existing harness to an installer they could take a Scosche (or similar) and put it all together for me?

Yep that's correct.

I'm sure they would, however, if you go that route they'll no doubt charge to do it and it may only be a few bucks more for them to install the whole thing. It shouldn't be that difficult to do yourself (or if you have a buddy who's got even a little experience), just takes a little patience and paying attention to the wire colors.

Well, there won't be a connector between the existing harness (that came with your HU) and the harness that you'll be getting from scoche or bestkits. You'll need to solder or crimp the bare wires together (while matching the wire colors).

Thats what i figured. I think i'll have a shop do it though.
I sure wish there was one harness that went from the HU to the stock harness... but i guess you can't have everything:(

I'm sorry, I thought that was obvious. After a while you come to expect that everyone knows what you (ie. ME) take for granted. Whether crimping or soldering, tho' it's really not too hard to put the two parts together and make them work.

thats the KD-SX980 Hu, right? I have the exact one, for the time being. I took it out of my Sentra and installed it into my protege. It is no problem at all to do. Just buy the wiring harness/kit and then connect the wires plug the harness kit into your plug that comes out of the car. If you go to a shop they will charge you, usually quite a bit. I had a friend do that, and got charged 40.00 labor, when they or i could have done it for free. Anyways its an easy task, if i were you i would do it myself unless you just have money to give away.


Also the harness kits you buy, usually havea guide on them for what each wire connects to, which makes it really, really easy, as long as you can connect wires.

I actually do have a soldering gun, and I know how to use it. I am just worried about doing the right wires.

The question i have is about the Scosche or Bestkits harness. does the harness only have a connector on one end or does it have two, if two, would I have to remove one end then solder it to the existing harness. Or is it just a matter of soldering the lose ends of both harnesses together?

The harness you buy (no matter which manufacturer you buy from) will be loose wires on one end. You'll have to solder or crimp or twist & tape wire to wire between the two harnessess.

Now i just have to get my act together and order a kit and harness. And i also need to get up the courage to remove the stock unit.:eek:

the kit i bought for my car was in the shape of a "y" the stem prt of the "y" was what you connected to all the wires on the JVC wiring, then one end of the "y" you plugged into another facotory plug(no wiring required) and then the other side of the "y" you plugged into another factory plug(also no wiring required). Like i said before, the kit I got told you what wire to hook into what wire. hope this helps.

if i change my HU from stock to a kenwood, would that still require soldering and all that? is there a way to avoid that?
