Neons Drain The Battery?
 

I've got a Eurolite Red Neon Underglow kit on my car, and I was wondering whether or not it drains the battery that bad? I know it's taking like 12,000 volts or somethig like that :eek: (through the transformer) but if I leave them on for 10-15 mins while the car is off, will it put alot of stress on the battery? I've had them on, and been able to start the car just fine even while they're running... I'm not sure exactly how the guy wired them, but in theory, while the car is running, they're fed off the alternator, right? (I can't find any leads directly on the battery for them.) They're just hard-wired in to work regardless of the position of the ignition / headlights switch, etc. So when I flip the switch, they're on.

So, back to my original question, it's not going to hurt the battery too much is it?

Neon lights are seriously low in power consumption. This will not hurt your battery.

I dont have neons, so I can't really say... But I would expect definately no. A lot of people around here with them leave them on for hours at a time outside the movie theater, etc. I was hanging out with these guys about a year ago, and the one guy had his on for a good 3 or 4 hours, it didn't seem to do much of anything.

Ummm - not really.

The alternator charges the battery, but also runs everything electric in the car while the engine is running. The battery plays no role in the electronics of the car once it is running, and it's only purpose is for starting the car, and running accessories with the engine off.

The battery does not "feed" anything in a running car - it's part of a system fed by the alternator.

umm the battery does play a role! it sucks additional power from the alternator to recharge ! :)

If you unplug your alternator, or have the belt snap, the car will run just fine, until the battery runs out...

You think? Ummm - no. The battery is only a PART of the electrical system. Yes, you car will run without an alternator until the battery runs out, because it's connected to the system. Fine. But what does that tell you? The car runs off the alternator! If the car ran off the battery, when would the battery charge?

And you CAN disconnect the battery with the car running, and the car will still run - until you run out of gas.

This is not really a topic of debate. Your car runs off the alternator - and that's the long and short of it. That's how cars work.

No need to get upset man... I just thought that the everything gets drawn from the battery...not the alternator. So the battery is kind of like a middle man. But I yield!!! You probably know more than I do :)

you cant disconnect the battery when driving, the car will turn off. my friend has a 240sx, and we were drifting one night when we hit a pot hole and somehow the negative terminal snappedd off the battery, and the car just shut off and wouldnt start again.

incorrect you CAN disconnect the battery, but the 2 terminals have to be connected so the alternator can run the car
