I have the Alpine cda 9815 installed with 10-guage power cable from battery. The decks 4x60 is powering just the rear factory speakers (for now). The deck is great and full of features. Also added is Ainet input adapter for audio input from a portable dvd player.
The door speakers are MB Quart PSD 213 (5 1/2" and 1" tweeters) :cool: The mids are mounted on mdf plates sealed with Dynomat Extreme and upgraded 14-guage speaker wire running through the door jams and to the crossovers in the trunk.

I cut the trunk liner board and seamed back the carpet so I could still have access to the spare. The amp rack is less than 4" high and constructed out of mdf and has speaker terminals. The sub box connects to the terminals with 12-guage speaker wire and bananna plugs for quick disconnect (for extra space). The amp rack holds the MB Qs crossovers, a blue neon tube and the Soundstream Continuum 5ch amp. The amp is bridged for 3 channels (4 ohms 2x175w for fronts and 300w for sub in 3 ohms).
The subwoofer is a JL Audio 12w6 mounted in a sealed mdf sub enclosure.
For extra looks there are blue neons added under front seats and in the amp rack and trunk cargo cover. It matches the Alpine deck leds.
Anyway it sounds really good, except the back door speakers are factory and sounds a little muffled.

Dude - this is exactly my plan for my next install, coming soon. Since I use the hatch for lots of crap, I'm going to install my amps under the front seats, freeing up some more room.

Then I'm planning on building a fiberglass enclosure (something very similar to what MaxxBling made a while back) for the passenger side of the hatch.

With any luck, I will be able to fasten this enclosure to the car using the bolt hole that secures the jack, inside that little panel.

The jack will fit in with the spare tire, and I'll be slicing the hatch floor mat up the middle (a bit off-center of course) so I will always have access to the spare without removing the sub.

You've got a nice setup! Very clean and functional - my favorite.

I wish it wasn't going to rain here this weekend - or I'd be getting started on my 'glasswerk. (no garage obviously).

Hey, thanks for the kind words. I hope this system inspires ideas for somebody starting on a car audio system for a Protege'.
The sub sounds fine in that location and it doesn't require any grill for protection. With a casual glance it also blends into the trunk interior.
The subwoofer box is easily removable thanks to a set of banana clips. With the sub box out of the car it allows plenty of extra trunk space.
The Alpine CDA-9815 is a fine unit, it has a few features I probably will never use like the tilt (it sits just fine in the protege without tilting the screen. The display is basic compared to other decks and can be blacked out if needed "to get better sq" per alpine? The built in amp is really nice and has x/o feature, a good starting point for a simple upgrade from factory. The 4volt preouts are providing clean signals to my 5ch amp. The deck sells for $500. retail but you can get it on e-bay for as low as $375.

i like it, its nice and clean, but i think it wouldve been better with the sub facing the trunk but other than that its really clean !
