it may (and probably has) been discussed before, but can someone tell me what i would need to do when i want to upgrade my amp and subwoofer with a polk/momo 12" woofer and about a 500 watt amp. what do i need to do to get the old wiring out ? i asked a guy at circuit city and the first thing he said was "oh, well with a factory amp you're talking about a TON of time and money to change over" the way i see it is just unplug the old and run a new amp wiring kit. am i wrong here?

You are not wrong - just run a new wiring kit. There is no need to pull the old wiring out - and it will come in handy if you sell the car - you can put everything back the way it was before.

Just make sure the power wire that went to the old amp (it's a self-powered sub, right?) is disconnected at the source. Where that is, I do not know - but you don't want a loose power wire that's juiced flopping around back there.

You could also just cap the power wire with a wad of electrical tape, or - better yet - shrink wrap the end of it. That way it cannot contact anything to create a short. Disconnecting it completely is a safer way, but if it's a real hassle to find the source, capping it off should be fine, also.

Heh. Never listen to circuit city. They told me my front speakers were 4" max. Uhhh I have 6 1/2"s in there right now :)

Also they said putting in a new headunit into my mom's Volvo would be costly and require lots of rewiring cause it'd have to by-pass the amp.... uhhh.... all I had to do was reach around to behind the radio and pull out an extra long wiring harness for the speakers and just plug it in to where the speaker inputs were (coming from the old amp, which is right under the steering wheel).
