I had an 86 saab 900 turbo from 1996-1999 and I had installed a switch to turn the cooling fans on and off on my dash becasue the fans would not come on till the engine was too warm (my thoughts). I used it for well over two years and had no prpblem. I intsalled a 12v toggle switch into the fan relay like blue LED'z said. I bet it would not be a problem with the protege......

The relay in my saab worked fine, too. The fan just came on much later then I wanted it to (the engine got warmer than I wanted it to).

I changed my oil last saturday and used mobile 1. I swear to god that my engine seems to run much smoother and runs cooler than it did when conventional petro oil. My temp guage is running about 5 degrees lower than it did it the hot weather with conventional oil.

I got much better gas milage on my first tank. I went 239 miles on 8.5 gallons (28.11 MPG) in 70% city, 30% highway, which would usually give me around 25 MPG. Very happy with the synthetic so far.

Let me know what you are going to do about your fans.

I think the setup you said was fine. I have not looked into turning on the AC fan w/o turning on the AC. Sounds like you have found out how to do it and it sounds like it would work my installing another switch to the passenger side fan.

Is there some way you can link the two together in series so when you turn on the regular cooling fan, both will turn on. I guess you could just play around wth some wiring.......

I had a friend do that to his civic. What he did though is intall a led so he could remember when it was on. What also was cool was when he was on the freeway, he could tell exactly how close to get to a car or truck to get the drag off of his car from the wind.

Just an idea....
