Loss of power problem
 

I have been having a serious problem with my system/hu recently. I have had my 02 protege for about a year now and since the first week i have had my system in the car, but here recently i have had a problem with my hu cutting off when i come to a stop and when this happens once i cut my car off i usually have to jump the car off.

I have a jvc sh55 head unit , 2 12in mtx thunder6000, a rockford fosgate punch 250a, and a 1 farad cap that i bought of e-bay for $30 bucks. everything was bought brand new when i bought the car except the amp that i have had for about 2 years now.

once this happened the first time i came to a stop and the radio shut down like i turned the power off ( it came up and said "goodbye") and when i took off the radio turned back on. there was some dimming of the lights and instrument cluster, also my windows rolled up very slowly. i have figured out that once i unhooked the amp ( and let the battery charge for about 15 min) the problem went away.

I thought that buying the cap, especally since i'm not pushing that much power, would keep the amp from putting so much strain on the battery?

anyways, does anyone have any ideas or solutions to the problem. any help would be greatly apprecieated

Sounds like your battery is dying on you. It could be a wiring problem or a problem with your cap. Your cap only stores current for high transients in music (like bass), and once it gives off a charge to the amp for the bass note, it has to recharge in order to get ready for the next time the bass hits. I would take the cap out of the equation, simply by unhooking it and see what happens from there. A faulty cap I learned from Blue Ledz will continuously draw current from your battery and not put out current to your amps like it should do. You bought it from Ebay and perhaps someone sold you a bad cap. That would be my first guess on why your battery goes dead each time you turn the vehicle off. Remote wires keep your amps from staying on all the time, so if they are in place, then the amps wouldn't do that. You can PM Blue Ledz and check with him. he had the same thing happen in the following cases: Bad amp was drawing more current and not putting out as much power, cap drawing current constantly and not putting out any thing to the amps, and recently his battery dropped to 10volts while engine was running!:eek:

Lastly, there is a thread on Stiffening caps that he wrote on www.clubprotege.com and Richard Clark tested a system with a stock alternator using 2000 watts of power from amps and tested it with the engine off, with engine on with a 15 farad cap, and then with the engine running and no cap. The results was that a cap doesn't do what it says it will do and works only in small systems at most. I was pretty shocked being it was a 15 farad one!!
