DONT BUY THE ALPINE!!!!

ALPINE JUST RELEASED NEW MODELS.

the replacement for the one your looking at has Base engine PRO which only the 7998 has right now. YOu can see the new ones at crutchfield. CDA-9813.
Even I am thinking of ditching mne for this one.

Also they have a new MP3 unit for only $280 retail! CDA9807!
THis one looks AWSOME!!!!!!!!!

The most recent crutchfield magazine has all the new ones. I assume you could find them on Crutchfields web site.

Also any shop starts the 7998 at $799. Alpines website is always higher price then any authorized dealer will charge.

Well that's alright.
we all gotta start somewhere on this.

From left: that square box is called a crossover. it is used to filter out where the HI frequency and mid/low frequency.

Middle: this is a tweeter, this will only give you the high frequency with the crossover.

Right: this is the woofer, this will give you the low/mid frequency.

I'm still a bit of a newbie on car audio myself, so anyone plese correct if i'm wrong.

NO need, you dead on ballz acurate.

The crossover is the piece to the left and it take the full range signal from the head unit or amplifier and split them. The higher frequencies will be sent to the tweeter only and this is done usualy at a 12 db per octive slope. The lower frequencies of mid, midbass, bass and sub bass are all sent to the large woofer whcih is on the right. another form of a crossover ususlay built into amps and some headunits allows you to stop the bass and sub bass frequencies away from the woofer which is good becuase they are the first cuase of distortion since the woofer can not accuratly reproduce these frequencies.

the alpine will be a good pick, whether or not you amp your speakers. it has higher wattage, and it has higher pre amp output voltage. plus it has a *slightly* higher S/N ratio, which for that close it doesn't really matter.

I'll have to agree on this one. Me personally, I am running the Alpine 7894 and I am very, very happy with it.

The JVC has a cool tilting feature with the face, so you can tilt it depending on how light is reflecting off of it, so you can still see it clearly. Keep in mind, that JVC has a newer model, the 909. From what I've heard (I haven't tested mine yet) JVC may have the quickest mp3 search capability, or something like that. I'm not totally sure, but its supposedly fastest in pulling up each track or something.

I don't know anything about the Alpine. Go for what you like best.. because even though it's about the sound and all that, you also want it to look good. If you can get both from one, I'd say go with that one.. you'll likely be happier with it on a broader level. At least that's my guess...

Alpine has 4 position tilt.
