Installing new OEM head unit

I may have to replace the head unit on my 2005 Mazda3s (non-MPS, non-BOSE). I'd prefer to stick with the OEM system, which is perfectly adequate for my needs, and maybe add a 3.5mm line-in so I can plug in an MP3 player.

Here are a few questions I'm hoping someone can answer:

- Will a 2004 OEM head unit work in my 2005 Mazda3, or should I stick with a 2005 unit for best results?
- If I swap in a different OEM H.U., will it just work or will it need to be programmed by the dealer to work in my car? One vendor I saw online warned that the H.U. might need dealer programming before it would function.

Thanks!

Yes a 2004 HU will work in your 2005 model. Technically '06+ models will also work, however the wiring for the LCD is different on those models and it wouldn't display anything in your '05 model.

There shouldn't be any programming to do to have it work.

For a simple line in check out the Aux Mod Basic, or Grom simple input.

Thanks, that's a big help. I have been looking at the Aux Mod setup -- if I have to replace the head unit, I might install that at the same time so that I only have to pull the head unit (hopefully) once.

Definitely easier if it's all at the same time. That said it's a matter of a minute or two to remove the HU so no biggie if you have to do it repetitively.

it will not need to be programmed by the dealer .you can do it by youself , it is easy
