how tall is the 02 ES manual shift knob?

I haven't tried to take the boot off to see where the threading is. I'm wondering how tall the factory shift knob is, from the threading to the top. The reason I'm curious, I'd like to shorten the overall length with an aftermarket knob. Yes, I know this won't shorten the throws (well, only slightly). I'm not really interested in a short shift kit, just something not quite as tall.

If I know how many inches the factory one is, I'll make sure I get one shorter than that.

I'm also not sure which style or brand I like best. If anyone has any recommendations they'd like to put a plug in for, feel free. I wouldn't mind having the option to shift with my hand in the vertical position, so possibly something like the MSP knob?

BTW, I have the factory ES manual shift knob with the round top, perforated rubber and the shift map on a silver-colored insert.

if you get a voodoo knob like mine, it will lower the knob hieght by about 1 inch. the voodoo will thread right on; plug and play style!

You could cut the shifter with a hack saw, but you would lose the threading. I have a momo phanton knob, it is black leather with silver plastic that matches the interior almost perfectly.

njaremka: I like the look of the voodoos... I'd be interested to see what they feel like.

RHAGEL: How tall is the momo phantom compared to the stock shifter?

it makes the shifter have more 'feel' to it. the knob itself is solid aluminum. (or if cost is no object, solid elemental titanium)

i have a MOMO sphere and its notacibly shorter than stock. i had the stock one on with my B&M ss, then i switched knobs and it feels so much shorter. its a great fit, and good quality. id really recomend it.

Two more things:
1.) Which of these would not require me to mess around with my stock boot and still look good?
2.) Which thread directly on?

So far, all my modifications have been easily reversible... not totally sure why, but I've done it so far.

the momo uses rubber sleeves and 3 small bolts, that are hidden by a collar. you can use the momos with the stock boot and it looks ok, but i think im gonna go with an aftermarket one soon. i believe the team voodoo screws right on, but dont quote me on htat.

I'd rather not use one with tightening bolts. I've heard they can screw up the threading, and often need re-tightening. Do all the MOMOs use tightening bolts?

yea they use tightening bolts, but they aren't the kind that screw into the shifter and mess up the threading. they tighten into a rubber stopper and put pressure against the shifter without damaging it. mine has been on for about 3 months, and has never needed tightening, still perfect.

Ah, ok.
Thanks :D

My shift knob is a little taller than stock, but has a great smooth feel to it. I decided to cut my shift boot and re-sew it so it looks like it is stock. Looks awsome, if I had a digital camera I would send you a Pic.

the voodoo thread right on just like stock. however, the base of the voodoo is smaller than stock, so you will have to do something with the stock boot to make it look a little better.

Well, thanks to you and to a trip to a local tuner shop, I've made my decision.

I'm not going to try to shorten the shifter with a shift knob. When I took off the stock knob to try an Ichiban (the best one they had there) ball I realized that the stock knob really isn't that big.

So I've decided to save up a little more money and eventually do the following:
1.) Short shift kit with stock knob
-or-
2.) Short shift kit with Sparco Tecno knob. I love the way it looks & feels in the MSP
