HID Headlights...

I was wondering where some of you guys picked up HID headlights and if ebay would also be a good place to pick them up

Roddimus Prime April-30th-2007 07:12 AM

Kargoboy (Gary) on this forum sells HID kits. I'd pick one up from him. He's a tad safer than ebay.

KrayzieFox April-30th-2007 09:39 AM

Yea, definitely go through Gary if you want some HIDs. Last time I checked he was doing a Group Buy (GB) on HIDs for $150 shipped to the continental US, so that's a helluva price. Here's a linky to the sale that has all the info on his kits.

If you're not retrofitting projectors, you're wasting your time on an illegal and useless modification.

Here's why:

Your factory headlights are designed for halogen bulbs with a specific output. HID lights will not light the road in the same way (which reduces the efficiency), and they will not have the precise cutoff that proper HID housings are designed to project, which means you will either be blinding people, or will have your headlights adjusted too low, which is needlessly reducing your lighting.

If what you actually want are blue headlights, get blue-tinted non-HID bulbs, from Philips or something. Or put LEDs in your headlight housing.

Many halogen housings do have very precise cutoffs. The HID retrofit kits try their best to position the light-outputting capsule as close to the position of the original halogen filament as possible. It isn't perfect, but they do it well enough that it more or less has no effect on the light output pattern. Obviously that varies greatly depending on the car.

how do you know if you have a halogen housing or projectors?

_Kansei_ June-28th-2007 10:44 AM

If you have a Protege (any generation), you don't have projector headlights.

If you have a 3,6,rx-8, etc you have projector headlights. If you look at your headlight housings and your low beam light comes out of a glass ball, that's a projector headlight.

Welcome to the forum!

It'll be costly unless you do the retrofit work yourself. You can contact the guys on that site and ask how much they charged that dude for the bi-xenon projector retrofit. Bi-xenon means it has HID high beams as well as low beams.

If you aren't going to get HIDs, the Protege5 headlights are some of the best in the industry for light output to the road. In tests, they even outperformed MOST factory HIDs, and without the blinding glare of many HID kits (of which the Audi TT and BMW X5 are the worst offenders). Black housing P5 headlamps will cost you $800USD retail (for the pair). Chrome housing P5 headlamps are half that.

I have stock headlights on my '06 3. Of course they are projector lights. I bought a set of bulbs and ballasts from ebay for $27.00. Was skeptical given the price and what not, but here is a picture of before and after. Decide for yourself.
