Help me touch up my paint!!
 

Hey, I just finished adding some paint to a real annoying rock chip I had on my drivers side door. I didnt use the brush that comes with the bottle, I went and got a fine artist's brush and trimmed that down even more.

So now it's all done however I would like to smooth it out a bit because in a couple of the spots it looks like theres a little more paint that needed.

So, what can i use to bring down the touch up paint and try to match it with the existing paint?? I've heard of rubbing compound and I think I have some in the garage but don't want to ruin the existing paint by scratching it up. Any suggestions???

I think if you take a look at the procedure they do describe how to remove excess paint.

Just wondering, since I have to do some touch up paint myself, does the second gen, more specificly 98 come with a clear coat or not?

Ok I did some reading up, and a number of places said to smooth things out with 2000 grit sand paper. Can anyone here speak from experience reassure me that this wont screw up the existing paint around the area i filled in or leave any marks???

2000 grit is so fine, that it will clean any surface to an almost mirror finish, it is used to give a very fine and smooth finish on materials. 1000 grit that I've seen used on metals left a finish that was very smooth and glossy. So you will be safe.

Ok I used the 2000 grit, now the surface is smooth, but the area around the scratch is dull and looks whitish. What do I use to remove those scratches?

CLean it off and polish it, or use a glaze, like they recomended in the article.

Just a quick tip, because I'm the sort of art geek who knows this kind of thing...If you "trim" a natural-hair brush, it will never paint right. It's the taper of the hairs that lets the paint flow out nice and smooth.

Good call not using the brush in the cap, though. Those things are useless.

Anyway - you really should read the article linked above. Follow all the steps, and you should get a really good finish.

yeah like they were saying above use like 1500 -2000 grit sand paper and wet sand it then after that buff it out and it'll look str8 hope this helps


depends on your color if its metalic then yeah it has a clear coat because its 2 stage paint but if its just white or black or anything like that, that doesn't have metalic's then no it doesn't because its single stage paint.
