Have a factory alarm but no shock sensor?

JAC, you mentioned the factory alarm has a shock sensor and the dealerships like turning them all the way down so that they won't go off, but I can't find it for the life of me!! I looked in the owner's manual and it just says "optional." I found the ghost switch finally!:) I just am curious so I won't have to go out and get another alarm system. I know some aftermarket manufacturers make a harness that works much like a head unit harness, connects the aftermarket wires so that they plug right in to the car's harness. Wouldn't that be nice! :D If any one has a ES and knows about shock sensor, please do tell. Thanks!

where is the ghost switch

MisterT July-5th-2003 10:13 AM

if you have a 5 speed, it is behind the dash and up a little (where the clutch is, but behind the dash). There's a metal bar (silver) that goes up (like in the owners manual, but with mine, there was a wire across it, so I couldn't see the ghost switch off the bat.

I looked all for it and don't think my car came with one. I guess I can order one through the dealership. I read other old posts and it has a sticker on it saying "SHOCK SENSOR." Unless I am a complete moron, (don't answer that), or it doesn't have one! :D Oh well.

I dunno about a "ghost" What I have is a box with a red blinker on it and a dial. I can tap the box and if the blinker doesnt light just turn the dial. Its like right behind the steering column.

well believe me...if you do in fact have the factory alarm...you DO have a shock sensor....mine does NOT have a sticker on it that says "shock sensor" but it does have a sticker with the alarm companies name on it....but I couldn't see that at first...it was on the back side...

ANYWAY....if you move your drivers seat ALL the way back so that you can lay on your back and look up under your dash....as you are looking up the BLACK BOX will be up and to your right hand side....look for a little black box a bit larger than a ZIPPO LIGHTER. it will have a little white/gray/red knob sticking out of one of the corners. That little knob is the sensitivity adjustment knob....

its funny....cause MOST people have had the problem with it being set TOO sensitive...which was the case with mine....I couldn't even wipe the outside of the car with a towel and it would set it off....a good stiff breeze would rock the car enough to set it off....so you can imagine what would happen if it was parked in a lot and the average ricer or biker drove by......BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP.....you get the idea....lol it took a bit of trial and error to get it set where I wanted it.....but at least now it takes a little bit to get it to go off.

I am not trying to argue, but I can find the main brain of the alarm, but can't find the shock sensor for the life of me. I have looked and looked even with a magnalite flashlight to make sure I wasn't overlooking it. Damn if I could only locate it. Do you have a pic of it?:D

I know I am a pain in the ass! :p

can you follow the wires from the brain to the shock sensor? There should only be a few sets if wires actually come outta the brain. What i can think of is starter disabler, battery, shocksensor, horn/lights. If you can see if you can just follow the wires.

The early 2001 Protege alarms do NOT have the shock sensor. I have the factory alarm, but I do not have the shock sensor. I even took the car to the dealer and they were suprised that my car did not have one. I asked about it, and they knew imeadiatly what I was talking about since they are close to the local airport and every time a plane takes off, it will set all the alarms off. I can kick, rock, shake, beat my car and the alarm will not go off, but if I try to open the trunk or reach through an open window to open the door, the alarm will go off.

So I am not crazy!! :D I can't tell you how many times I have looked and looked and traced the wires from the brain and could never find one. Did you order one from the dealership? If so how much did it run? I am curious as to where on the steering wheel column it should be mounted. Thanks and I bet you that is what it was! I had my car for 2 years, but it was when they first came out. The car that I have still had the white wrap on the hood and roof when I test drove it. The salesman and I passed a cop and was surprised that we weren't pulled! It didn't even have the dealer stickers on it above the Mazda name on the rear. The only thing that pissed me off when purchasing the car was when after doing the paper work, the car disappeared (another salesperson was taking a young couple out for a test drive in it. They wanted it because it was the only black one, but I got it <evil grin>. Besides, I purchased it and they were looking to lease a car. They got the dark green which would have probably been my 2nd choice.

Well, I can't say your not crazy, I don't know you! But, as regards the alarm, you're not crazy. I still don't have one. I would think if you REALLY wanted one, you could order one from the dealer. But you might be stuck buying the whole alarm over from a later model.

my friends mom went to mazda and she had the rest of the alarm like the one from the msp put in

MisterT August-5th-2003 05:18 PM

How much did that run her? I emailed the dealership but the S.O.B.'s never replied (probably because it inquires a small purchase (bastards!) :D
