Has anyone noticed LOOSE door panels????

When I shut my doors I can see the door panels shake. Are they loose or are they made like that? I have had the panels off and put them back on and they are still the same. All the screws are in and everything. Is something wrong here? Does anybody else have this problem? Or maybe you get rattling with your loud front speakers. By the way my car is a '99 Protege ES.
THANKS
-James

Mine does that too. Don't know why, but it irritates me. I also hate how tinny the rear doors feel when the are closed. The new 01+s don't do that anymore.

If you have your door panel off try tightening the bolts in the various places around the door. That helped me a little bit.

I had the same problem with my doors... What I did was I took some rubber insulation tape (the flat weatherstripping tape), removed the door panel, and placed it along the edge of the door (right where the door panelīs edge would be).

Then I replaced the door panel on top of that stuff. It fit so tight that I havenīt heard the noises again. This was two years ago. It worked like a charm. And itīs right along the edge of the door panel, so you canīt tell itīs there.

I also used it along the edge of the center console (where I put my right elbow when I drive). It kept that from rattling as well.

I could get some pictures over the weekend if someone is really interested in doing this, or if I wasnīt clear enough.

Hey man, i would love to see some pics. Thanks.
Iīll borrow by dadīs digital cam and get some pics over the weekend. Nothing special to it, but I guess the pictures would clear it up a bit.

PIX

Sweeet!! I'll do anything. The rattling pisses me off. And it will be even worse when I put my new speakers in. Can't wait to see pix.

Pictures of the doorpanel weatherstripping... very simple.

In the picture below, the lettering came out a bit messed up... it says: "You can see a little bit of weatherstripping here, where I messed up a little, and stuck it out of alignment." On the other arrows it says "Separate doorpanel" (I mean the verb "to separate", not the adjective).

In the picture below, you can see the weatherstripping. The captions say "Weatherstripping along edge of doorpanel, right where the edge of the doorpanel touches the door metal", and "You can see where the doorpanel has flattened the spongy weatherstripping."

When I first started to hear the noises I thought it was a "rattle", but I realized it's actually the plastic of the doorpanel rubbing against the door metal, which makes a weird noise that I sounds like a rattling noise. I noticed that the noise stopped if I pushed against the doorpanel.

I then got a roll of that spongy weatherstripping, removed the doorpanels, and stuck a piece of the stuff from the top to the bottom of the rear edge of the doors (all the way from the doorlock to the bottom of the door). I then went for a drive and smiled all the way... noise free.

Make sure you stick it along the place where the very edge of the doorpanel would be. That way it will make the doorpanel fit very tight (or as Goldmember would say: "it vil fit veri toit") and it will not be visible.

By the way, if you guys do this, post a reply and let me know if it worked. I would like to hear back from people and know if it stopped the noises.

Have a nice day.

:)

It's funny how you have to wait until it's warm, and how I was wearing a t-shirt and jeans when I took those pictures at 9am today.

At times like these I don't miss living up north (from my point of view, even Florida is "North").
