Has anyone done this before with their calipers?

Anyone ever paint there calipers with spray paint, but spraying the paint in a can or bowl then brushing the paint on? Someone did this on this page, http://www.boxsey.com/projects/calipers/ . I would like to buy some Foliatec or G2 brush on paint, but it isnt available in orange.

If anyone has any suggestions, please post them.

Arkos October-10th-2002 09:24 AM

That's how I ended up doing it

I just used the 1500 deg ceramic paint you find just about anywhere. If you're going to spray it into a cup, then I would suggest using a foam brush (not a bristle brush), and after you spray it into the cup, let it set up a bit before you use it to paint. It makes it much easier to get good coverage that way.

Cool. Whats the best way to spray the paint into a cup/bowl without making a huge mess? I could just see myself in a big cloud of paint, with only a few ounces of paint in the cup. :D Thanks for the tip about having the paint thicken a bit.

Heheheheh, ... that would be funny, ...

Anyway, I just put the cap of the spray can into a plastic grocery bag (I think I doubled it up), then kinda wrapped the rest of that bag around the can and button. Press the button through the bag, and it _shouldn't_ get anywhere, .... watch out for drips. I taped off the little fittings around the caliper (did NOT remove them) and went fairly slowly. It took me about 3 coats, I might have gone for a 4th, but was too tired. looks good, just dirty on my car right now.

oh, ... before I painted, ... I sprayed everything down with degreaser, and used a wire brush on the caliper. I think that took off the OEM paint that was on there, but it did a nice job of roughing up the surface.

derrick1623 October-10th-2002 02:55 PM

thats how i repainted mine, use a degreasor first, then just spray away into like a small container(i used little paint trays from pep boys), and a bristle brush works just fine. tape off the brake lines, and the fittings, and blots...pads if you want,

Do you have any pics of what I have to tape off? I have never worked on brakes before, so Im not sure what parts are ok to get paint on, and what are not.

Arkos October-10th-2002 04:14 PM

Paint anything that is painted, don't paint anything that is not. once you get up in there you'll understand. There are some metal bits, and the brake pads themselves, ... etc.

Thats what I figured. That is exactly why I would rather brush paint on with a small brush, then spray the paint on which may get to places I dont want paint at/on. Thanks for the reply. MaxxMazda recommended using Tremclad brush-on paint from Home Depot. I went to the (2) local Home Depots, and neither carry Tremclad. I think Tremclad might be a Canada thing, has anyone seen this in the US? Anyone recommend another paint that is widely available?

Spray it into a bag! lol jk
you can just spray the can on its side in the dish this will not allow all the gases to rush out as fast.

Ive read lots of sites about different methods of painting calipers. Several people on the gti-vr6 board said they used Testors Paint Pens. They said after a year, it looks like new. I would think it would wear off alot faster, since that paint is for models. Anyone try this?

Arkos October-11th-2002 07:58 AM

I used the high temp ceramic duplikolor (I think that was the brand). Works well.

mnkyboy, your pm box is full! :doh: i'll let you know how my paint job turns out.

Mxyzptlk October-12th-2002 04:24 AM

I tried painting stuff before like that but the spray paint was way too thin to work with. I would just buy the kind meant for brushing.

I would buy the kind meant for brushing, but I cant find orange. Have you?

I used to work for a CART indy-car team and one thing I learned during my 5 year stint of "going over the wall" was,"If you plan to do a project, do it the right way" otherwise you will surley have problems in the future..........

Buy a Brake Caliper Paint kit that you can purchase at any Tuner shop or through the internet. They use a aircraft grade Epoxy that will last for years to come. Included with the kit is brushes and brake cleaner for the "PERFECT JOB".

Do It Right the 1st Time.

Later, Speedbump.

I would like to buy a Brake Caliper Paint Kit, but I cant find one that comes in ORANGE . If you have seen one, or know where I can get a custom color, please tell me. Thanks :D

Just use the DupliColor high temp engine enamel. That's what I used on my calipers and it worked great. Their ad in Sport Compact mag says they have over 40 colors available, so I'm pretty sure orange would be one of them. :)

Arkos October-14th-2002 08:12 AM

Just let it set up a bit before you brush it on. Works great.

On my eclipse, I wanted lime green which was not available in caliper paint. I went down to Wal-mart and bought grabber green high temp engine paint.

Didn't waste any time puttin it in a bowl though. With a lot of newspaper and masking tape, I sprayed the caliper while it was on the car. This requires a good attention to detail while you are masking though, and some ingenuity on cover some of the parts...but it came out great. The paint has held up through many autocrosses and has even survived the brakes getting so hot that they smoked.

skyhawk174 October-14th-2002 02:18 PM

Hey mnkyboy, I am sure I saw an orange engine paint, I think it was some sort of Frod orange or something like that. If you cannot find the caliper paint in that orange colour you could probably go with that option. I used a brake caliper paint made by a comapny called VHT and works great.

I helped another member on this board paint his calipers and we did it by hand by spraying it into a can (empty of course) and then used a brush. For mine, I did it the hard way and sprayed it but actually took apart the caliper except the housing connected to the barke line. That way I figured everything would be neat and clean.

Ive seen that orange at Walmart and Autozone. I would rather take my caliper off and spraypaint it, but I have never worked on brakes before. Theres somethings I would rather leave to an experience person, and brakes are one of them. I could just see me riding down the road, and my brakes dont work because I didnt bleed the lines correctly. Unless you have a tutorial thats pretty simple, im not messin with the brakes :D

Painting with a brush is pretty harmless, unless I get the some paint in the wrong place.

Yeah, you do have to know what you doing but the way it is done, you don't disconnet the brake line. I don't like bleeding lines so I left it attached and painted it while it was still connected. I can try and post some pics I took while I was doing it later tonight.

You do need metric tools of course including a metric allen key since one of the claiper mounts are attached with a socket head cap screw with an allen head.

Or you could just do it the easy way and brush paint it but you will have to do at least 3 coats.

How long does that Duplicolor Engine Enamel paint take to dry? 3 coats wouldnt be so bad, unless it takes awhile to dry. :D

chris, that's the same paint i got last week for my calipers. i'm going to paint them later this week (hopefully). here's what the can states:

Apply light initial coat with can 8-12 inches from surface....follow with a full coat. Allow 10 min. between coats. Apply all recoats within 1 hour...dries to touch in 1 hour. Can be handled in 3 hours.

Arkos October-14th-2002 03:56 PM

Basically, by the time you get around to all 4 calipers, take a small break, the first one should be to the point where you can add the second coat.

skyhawk174 October-14th-2002 05:22 PM

Okay here is a short sequence of how I painted my calipers. I sprayed mine.

This is the caliper area masked and the rest of the car protected by plastic to prevent overspray

looks nice I like that

pollito14 October-19th-2002 10:48 PM

Dudes I painted my calipers, and the center parts of my disks and yes I did get paint on my disks but after some good braking the paint came off. I used high temp engine paint. I will admit that it wasn't a true color (it was black) but it worked A-OK! here's a pic

Hey pollito14, this Protege 5 on that site in your sig looks nice! Love the rims. Are they a member of this board?

Also, this pic looks pretty cool, what is that building called!?

skyhawk174 October-20th-2002 12:26 AM

Yes sir ree bob, very nice rims, but he has them listed as

* Aros Antera 19"
* Gomas Pirelli 215x35x19
* Suspención H&R

I would think that those tires would be rubbing all over the place. I wonder if he faired out his fenders. Doesn't look so. Still I like the rims.

I cant find anything about "Aros Antera". I did a search, but nothing came up. Is there another name for these? I went on Antera website, and most of the rims are named by #s.

pollito14 October-20th-2002 09:41 PM

Well all I know is that he had 19" Antera or Pantera not sure which plus suspension but the guy didn't even know what kind!! I asked him and he said "uh..um.. I just went to the tuner shop and asked for the best and lowest suspension and they sold me that one.." I tried looking through the 2inch gap between the tires and fender to see what kind of suspension that is but it was filthy and couldn't see what it was. I didn't even catch the guy's name that why I put Juan del Pueblo = John Doe. I doubt he flared the fender cause this guy only did two things to his car, tints and suspension/rims/tires actually it 4 but you know.. he was planning to get some video equip. installed soon. Center screen and one on each headrest. He supposedly is going to show up at a local car reunion next saturday, I'll try to get more info.

The name of the building is Primera Iglesia Bautista de Caguas = First Baptist Church of Caguas (Caguas being the city I live in)
If you look closely you can see the cross in the architecture. I too think it looked nice. I remember when I was young, I would walk by it and was nervous because I thought the building was going to tip over and fall on me. :p :D

Thanx for visiting the site. Any opinions on appearance? Unless you know spanish and can tell me what you think about the content. ;peace;

PS I just made a search personally and if you go to www.cecwheels.com and see the menu at the top that says ANTERA click on TYPE 309 you can see the wheels he's got.
