Front Components Selection and Install
Now, i haven't prepared a list of what i'm interested in, but i want to install new front 6 1/2 inch components in my front doors of my 94 lx. i bought some kenwood 5 1/4 components off the club somewhere and they sounded like shit, they didn't fit right into the front doors and didn't sound right with a 1/4 inch gap around the outside of the speakers...plus they were both cracked, so i gave up. my question is what component sets that you guys know about (under $200 bucks) would fit in our doors? what sounds good? or should i just get some good 2-way coaxials and scrap the tweeters, as i don't plan on amping these, just running 27watts (60 peak) to each. brands i've been considering, or can't find detailed info on are: MB Quarts, Infinity, Rocksford Fosgate, Polk components
peace edit: i've also been considering a custom dx-style grille that places the speaker on the outside of the door with some factory or oem looking grill to give me a little more clearance behind the speaker, would that sound ok if dynamatted? |
What kind of mounting depth do you have? That seems to be an issue. I had Kenwood components ages ago and didn't care for them either. I would go with coaxials or look on Ebay for a used set of good component speakers that fit the depth of your doors.

I just finished installing Infinity Reference components. I havent got the amp working yet, but even off the factory deck they sound great. Easy to install too, all you need is to make/buy an adapter.

umm, i think 2 1/16th is the deepest, i'm not sure, maybe 2 5/16th's?? i forget, the kenwoods had those neodynium magnets and they just didn't perform well at all, even without a cracked speaker, it wouldn't have sounded right. infinity seems to be the norm for many, especially cost effective and a 'bang for your buck' if you will, compared to other brands if you can find them priced right. as far as adapters and factory harnesses, i wish i kept mine, but i cut the damn things off, just solder and shrink wrap is sufficient.
