Front bumper, Protege5, what kind of plastic?
 

Anyone know what kind of plastic the front bumper is made out of? My wife scraped the lower left corner, and I want to paint it.

I plan on sanding the shredded plastic, and spraying it with a good plastic paint.

What kind of sandpaper should I use?

What kind of paint should I use? Ive seen some Rusoleum "Plastic" spray paint that is very close to the Vivid Yellow. It says "No Priming or Sanding required". Anyone use this before?

I've tried many different kinds of paint on plastic. And sorry to say they all suck. Go to an automotive paint suppliewr and they can mix you up some OEM paint with the additive for plastic in it, and give you the clear and primer you need for a professional finish. They even will put it all in spray cans for you! And you'll maybe have $40 in it.

Im not sure I understand you correctly. $40 for a can of spray paint?

Have you tried the Krylon "Fusion" plastic spray paint?

I honestly don't know what the bumper is made of but it's likely a TPO or some other type of olefin. 3M sells quite a bit of stuff that you can use that is specifically formulated for fixing scratches, nicks and gouges in bumpers.

try out the fusion paint by krylon.

as for sanding, geez i dunno.
i would start with a 1500 grit and see from there...

I work at an autobody shop and the best way to sand it would be to start around 180 220 grit to work down the scratches. use water when you do this, otherwise the plastic willl get rough. Finish sanding with 320 or finer. Best bet to prime the spot and then wet sand with 600 grit after it dries. Then spot paint the area and you should be good to go. If the scratches are deep you will have to use a body filler to fill them in, there is no other way to get them out! I hope this helps and if you need any more help let me know!
