floor mats
 

my floor mats are constantly moving around as i move me feet to hit the brake clutch and gas, is it a good idea to drill them to the floor? or is that too risky

Sure drill holes in the floor...oh yeah and while you're at it you should drill some holes in the roof to let the hot air escape when you have the car parked in the sun....oh and drill some holes in the hood so that the hot air can get out and and and uhhh drill some holes throughout the car......can never have enough "SPeed Holes"......LMAO

Seriously I'd advise against drilling into the floor.....

I dunno maybe velcro would work...are you talking about cloth mats or the plastic/rubber kind?

velcro works fine.....just attach the seperate pieces to the floor and the matt....works like a champ.

What year and type is your protege? The p5 comes with a pin attached to the seat that holds the floor mats in place. maybe this will also...but velcro is probably your best bet.

In my sedan, the factory mat has a grommet that fits over a pin on the floor just in front of the driver's seat.

When I put my new rubber mats in I just punched a small hole in the driver's side mat and popped it on the pin as well.

It has not slipped forward yet. :)

(The place I punched the hole is not in a water collection area! :p )

I have to say this... That little grommet and pin setup in the P5's is a godsend!! My mat never moves... just one question though, why didn't they do the same on the passenger side????? My girlfriend's always bunching up the floormat and making a mess!! But, to the original question... Velcro!!!

Hey Adam, did you also notice that there is a spot to put a pin holdy thing there too? However, Mazda does not sell the pin separately but as part of a mat set. So when you buy mats, you get the pin. What you need to do is go to the dealer where you bought the car and find out if you can get the pin by itself. That's what I did so now all I have to do is punch a hole in the passenger mat and add a gromet.

I never noticed that... I'll have to phone my dealership and ask them... how'd you manage to get them to give you the pin? I wouldn't think they'd have spare ones!?!?

I was wondering if anyone else had noticed the lack of the "pin set-up" on the passenger side. This was one of the first improvements I made to my car. I went to my dealer and explained what I wanted to do. A few things that I learned:

- The pin is NOT a separate part. It is ONLY sold with the floormats. So if you want to buy new floormats eventually, you would then receive the elusive second pin. Just make sure you don't break the one you have now in the meantime :)
- Most dealers do not have any spares lying around.
- This is NOT an easy part to get.
- If you talk nicely and be patient, people are willing to help you out.

My dealer eventually removed a pin from a show-room model for me. I never asked, they just offered. I was happy to accept it as a "warranty replacement".

Once you have the pin the next challenge is to locate someone who can install a grommet in your passenger mat. Find a local heavy-duty seamstress or tarp manufacturer. Most places only stock brass grommets. I managed to find a black one to use exactly the same size and colour as the driver's side.

In the end I am very happy as I no longer have to adjust the passenger mat EVERY time someone gets out of my car. The beauty is that I never ended up paying a penny for either step!

Yeah some knob decided to keep my pin for themselves.. so I never got an original one (hoping my dealership has some luck finding one for me).. I guess mine is in your damn car!! :)

Something similar happened to my family at a Saturn Dealer. We have an L-series sedan and one of the brake lights had burnt out. My dad and I went to every autozone, pep boys, and strauss in the area, and none of them had the part number listed for which bulb it used. All the owners manual for the car said was something like P5/25W or something. Not the trade# or whatever it is actually called.

so we ended up going to the dealer where we bought the car. The service dept. was closed, but the head sales guy was there and we told him what the problem was and he went looking through owners manuals for the more recent models (ours was a 2000, they had 2002's on the floor).

After 15 minutes or so he gave up and said, "Well... there is one last way to find out..." and he opened up the trunk on one of the floor models and took out one of the bulbs from the tail lights. "looks like its a 1011 bulb" (or whetever it actually is, i dont remember off hand) and then handed it to us.
