Does anyone have pics of rear door speakers installed?
 

I would like to see some good quality pics of aftermarket speakers installed into the rear door of a p5. Of course, with the door panel removed. I am most interested to see how people made the speaker fit the three mounting holes. I've read people trying to explain what they did but we all know the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. I have my new Boston Acoustics RM6 speakers and removed the panel today. Even tho my speakers have a 3-hole configuration, the holes are not far enough from the center of the speaker so will not reach all of the factory drill holes.

i don't have any pics, but mine fit in there perfectly w/o any mods. could be cause my spkrs use metric measurements? :dunno: i was looking at your spkr and was wondering if they'll fit depth wise. it looks pretty deep. have you tried it in there yet?

Ya, I stuck the new speaker in the opening and it went in all the way. These speakers are 2.5 inches in depth and the door was definately deep enough for the speaker. I though I might have had to use my 1/2 inch spacer but it's not needed.
This doesn't match the 2 inch depth that the doors are only supposed to have but the speaker went in all the way.

since you're asking about mounting holes, i'm assuming you didn't put them in yet. but do you think you'll get full range on your windows? (all the way down?) it was mazda who told me the rear's were 2in. (but i got a bit more than that with mine) so maybe that was for window specs as well? well, hope someone here can help you out. i totally dig your setup!

I never thought of the windows. Hmmm, I'll have to experiment I guess. I suppose that any fabricated mount that I need to make could include the half inch spacer that comes with the speaker. I may have to drill new holes into the door to make them fit. Does anyone have ideas that don't involve drilling the door?

the speakers in is easy but getting wires to the speakers how. I took off the side tower things and its a wiring harness that has no room for more wires

I recently put in aftermarket speakers and I didn't cut the doors, I used the Sosche SAF7 adapter brackets to hit those stupid 3 holes that Mazda uses. That part was pretty painless, but what I discovered is that I didn't have enough clearance above the speaker, rather than below it and had to cut the plastic door panel--this is probably what you'll have to deal with if you put in spacers. That's another story and that part I certainly woudn't do how I did it. Anyway, here's a description of what I did with pictures, including the adapter bracket and the speaker in it:

As for how to wire into it, I can see two options:

1) Cut the factory harness and solder new wires to the leads left by cutting off the harness. Solder the other ends to your speakers. I did this for the rear doors but I wouldn't recommend it. I got smarter for the front doors and did this:

2) Get terminals (standard 16-22 gauge). Crimp male terminals to some wire, then slide the terminals into the factory harness. You can then connect the other ends of the wires to your speakers either with wither solder or female terminals, your choice. This was much easier to do and has the advantage of being easy to change later if you need to.
