DHD AMP???? Good or Bad

When I first got this system, this dude that was helping me got me this 400 watt 2 channel DHD AMP. At First I was a little skepcital about it. But Once everything was hooked up it sounded great. The only down side of it was that mine made a loud thump when it turned off. If that bad? And Is DHD a good source????

umm that amp is.... well.. not useing current technology, that loud thump i believe is a hard turnon/off circuit, not soft like the amps i have.. someone correct me if i am wrong..

You are correct, this is old hard technology, that is produced because the assembly line is still intact, not for it's technical merits (sorry to be that blunt). The thump is the product of "hard off"- no way for power to be bled off gradually like capacitors, and/or the use of a out put circut stop so when power stops the first place the signal is cut is the outputs.
This is not to say the amp section itself is clean with no gain noise (hiss) but the power is pretty much straight in to do business, and straight off when power goes away.
As a ampflier the circut design is not bad, and clean if not ever pushed. Yes, thumps are not good for you system, but will not normally result in killing speakers...

So if it worth gitting a new amp or is it ok for now...and I can get one later???????

Dave Cameron July-31st-2002 10:58 PM

OK for now I would imagine, a new amp should be considered when you can though... lots of opinions on this board of brands, that might be a new post topic though- :D

dhd is actualy a flea market brand overated they only put out about 50% of their rated power and even then its got a high amount of distortion wich is bad for your speakers.

ok if that amp isn't any good then what about a Koiler amp. Are they any good???

Robdoggz August-4th-2002 04:25 PM

sorry that koiler amp might actually be a downgrade let me know your budget and what you will be pushing and at what ohm load you need max power at if you are using subs.

I was just wondering cause that is what one of my friends is pushing...thats all...but thanks for you info....
