Dash Light Mod. Cheap (any Color)!

Hey ppls, my friend came over today, he wanted to change his dash lights and do something different. So i took the dash cluster out took the blubs out. Strange. The lights have Green Covers over em to make them light up green on the cluster. So i took the covers off, and put the cluster back in.
Looked whitish but there was a yellowish/white light shinning on the gauges. Looked ugly.

So we went to Autozone and got 3 packs of Blue bulbs (2ea in pack) since there are 5 bulbs. I installed them. and they looked bangin. Much MUCH dimmer than the stock ones. but if ur goin for looks then this is a hit. You can put amber/Red/Green or blue in. Im gunna try the Hyper White/Xenon bulbs to see what they look like.
Ill take pictures tomm, then post em.

Also i need to find how to change the lights in the Heat/AC controls.

orange dash lights

the stock dash lights for the 2002 protege 5 is orange. I want to change them to be blue or white but how would you change the lights. i need to change the lights in the odometer area, the a/c controls, and the shifter.

To change the dash lights, there are 2 screws at the top of the guage cluster. Unscrew those and then pull out the black plastic surrounding the guages. It will pop right off it's held on with clips at the bottom. From there I think there are 3 screws you need to remove to get the guages out. After that unhook the 3 wiring harnesses. Now the guages are free! Turn it around and you will see a bunch of green lids. Twist those off and the bulbs are stuck to them. Now you can change your bulbs.

Are the lights for the first gen fairly standard? Do they make colorful ones for ours... OK well now I'm convinced, off to Kragen, this should be fun until my indiglo gauges arrive...

I always thought that the faces themselves vere colored and not just the bulbs...........post pics so I can see what it looks like...

the bulbs for the Heat/AC controls are in the back........little hard to get a hold of them, since there is so little room, but it can be done................

the other 2, the ouside 2, are tiny ones, that i haven't found different color ones.
Why don't you just paint them with the paint that they got for painting corners........that should work........

Heh, yeah, I was a little tired and cranky, maybe now that I've taken a nap I can look at it a little more carefully ;)

I don't know if this has already been discussed, but underneath the drivers seat is a connector(there should only be one). I traced it from the seat belt. Disconnect it and no more Mr. Seatbelt. It also eliminates the 5 chimes after you turn on your ignition. As for the chimes when you leave your key in the ignition when the door is opened and when you leave your lights on, that's still there. Even though he's gone, I still obey the law.

try this

Remeber the needles in the 3rd gen proteges are ambar colored, you will need to sand off the color in the needle and paint it white for better results
This site has some awesome kits:
