Comment on this system setup and any suggestions

I want to install a descent system in my 2002.5 Protege 5. I have mixed feelings about my setup so I figured I would put it out on the board. Let me know what you think and please offer any suggestions.

Amp: Phoenix Gold Tantrum 600.4
FS: MB Quart Discus 6.5 Components
RS: MB Quart DKD 116 6.5 Coaxial

The rest I am taking out from my old car -
Amp: Coustis 300W
Subs: Rockford Fostage Punch 10"

I want to stay with the factory headunit right now. I wasn't sure if I could install 6 x 9 Component speakers in the front or how they would sound. If I did that, I would prob. go with JL audio tweeters.

Thanks for your input.

maybe its me, but I cant see putting in new speakers without a head unit. The factory doesnt have a eq so you arent going to get much better sound quality. Other than less distortion at full blast

Yep, I totally agree. Don't even start with anything else before you upgrade your HU.

me three i agree! hey that rhymes.. anyways..... yes Stock HU = garbage, new HU 1st = way to go!

I've personally installed HU's 1st in two different cars (keeping the stock speakers). One is a civic and the other is a corolla. It's definitely noticable!

On the other hand, i've tried a different route with my P5 by upgrading the speakers and I would say that there was a slight improvement, but wasn't as much as i expected.

(of course, everything audio in my P5 now is aftermarket :D)

it can be done

I ran my subs w/ the stock deck for months but couldn't get the best sound i wanted. It can be done but it is better with a killer HU. Try it for a while w/ the stock HU and then upgrade if it's not good enough.

Thanks for the input. I know Sony isn't great for car audio but what does everyone think about the Sony CDX-MP70? The deck would look great the P5.
Also, no one has mentioned whether or not I could use 6 x 9's for the FS. Thanks.

6x9s in front would require some modification. The door holes are nowhere near large enough, and I don't belive there is enough depth between the door and the inside panel to "cheat" (have only the back of the speaker through the stock location - smaller than 6x9 standard size).

Go for either a good set of components (my preference for SURE!) or a good set of coaxials - either use 6.5" coaxials (which will need adapter plates to fit the stock location, but no big deal) or use the stock 5x7 (6x8 - same thing) size.

The rear speakers are 6.5s stock - but the mounting hole spacing is strange (only 3), so it requires drilling one hole to mount speakers in there (unless the replacments happen to have mounting holes in the right locations).

You can do fine with the stock HU plus amps, but I'm more inclined to agree with the crowd here, and say a new deck is in order - for the benefit of RCA outputs at least, not to mention the overall SQ and adjustment benefits of a better quality deck.

Thanx for your feedback. I am going to be doing the install pretty soon. I have decided to try to stock HU for now...I am not concerned about power since I am using two amps. The amps are going to under the driver and passenger seat. I will be sure to take pics of the install and post them when I am done.
I wanted to use Phoenix Gold Tantrum Speakers to, so that they would go with the amp but I can't find them anywhere.

How hard have you looked?

Tantrums at SoundDomain (scroll about halfway down the page)

And at someplace called "Altas Security Corp" (check the right side list for the coaxial and components).

There are probably more out there, too.

A Lithuanian car stereo site?? Very cool. Heck get the stuff there just so you can tell folks you have a Lithuanian car stereo, and them blow them away! :D

Hehe - you're too perceptive, Dave.

I had no idea that was a Lithuanian company.

The prices are good, but the shipping will kill ya', huh? ;)

Phoenix Gold Tantrum Speakers

I knew they were at a Sound Domain but I was looking for site that may carry them cheaper. I shoud have mentioned that in my previous post. So far, they are the only site I have found that carries them.
Is there a reason why there are no Phoenix Gold Tantrum speakers on Ebay? I want to build a Tantrum system but I am skeptical about the speakers since I haven't heard them and they don't pop up in too many sites.

onehawaiian August-7th-2002 02:42 AM

hmmm, ebay ppl carry a lot of titanium series amps, but yeah, it's rare to see a tantrum amp, and i really like those. to get them locally in hawaii would cost an arm and leg.

FUSION Audio

OneHawaiian, I was wondering how you would rate FUSION. I don't know anyone else who has a complete FUSION system. Their amps are def. much cheaper than the better known brands. Do you think they would be as good as the Tantrum Line? Also, how would u rate FUSION speakers? Are they comparable to MQ Quarts, or Infinity (not perfects)?
Thanks for your input.
