CF hood for 97/98!!!!!

Hi all,
Ive been in contact with a company based out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada called iON Performance in regards to a carbon fibre hood for the 97/8 Protege. Here is an excerpt from a recent email:

Hi Kris,
If you can commit to an initial order of 10 pieces (including your own) then at least the prices/hood will be more reasonable.
If 9 hoods are being shipped down to Oregon to CS, then the cost of shipping/hood is $100US.
If it's just done in the regular CF pattern, then each hood will cost ~$650CAD/hood. This is factoring some of the tooling cost/ hood.
A deposit of 50% must be made @ the time of order. We'll also need a stock hood to replicate.
And yes, if you don't want the washer nozzles to be pre-drilled, they can be left un-drilled.
Best Regards,
Jack

For those of you wanting to know the exchange, $650 CDN is equivalent of about $475 USD.

This company is pretty well known in Canada in the world of Suburu's. iON also makes an OEM hood for the P5 as well as a ram air style with a ram air ducting sytem similar to a hood from Cervinis.com. They also have the ability for colour CF weave and CF/kevlar weave.Their CF hood for the P5/MP3/MSP Protege - weighs in at only 12lbs (well actually 11.9lbs).
- Features rolled edges (so not cut-off like some other hoods) this prevents lift from occuring;
- All OE hood mounting points are retained;
- Zinc/Nickle plated hood latch included
- The underlay/under hood structure is made of NBFRP which is a maleable form of fibreglass. The whole top skin however is CF or CF/Kevlar depending on your choice.

iOn also have some neat toys for the Protege's (3gens) such as upgraded break kits, including a big break kit with a big hefty price tag to go with it, and have done business with at least one guy who recognizes them from their previous days...thread here:

For those interested, iON Performance currently holds the title for the highest powered 2.0L Subaru Impreza WRX in the UK that's daily driven. Over 435awhp @ 1.8bar boost and over 350lb-ft torque. Best of all it's a in a sleeper wagon chassis! The only changes that the owner of this car made was the use of our header system and P500 hybrid turbo. The rest of his car remained the same as before the use of our parts (which made ~300awhp and 287lb-ft torque @ 1.36bar boost)

So back to OUR hood...the hood to be created would be an OEM style hood in basic CF. Derrick from Corksport will be talking to iON in the next day about this project. For those of you in the US, its looks as though you would be able to get your hood through corksport.com and not have to have it shipped from Canada.
Also, for an added $75 CDN ($55 USD), you can have a colour CF weave. Colour CF is available in blue, red, or yellow. Orange is also available, but may cost more as their is very little of it.

Here is a pic of iON's hood for the 3gen/P5...

If there is success with this hood, im sure one for the 95/6 Protege could then be made too! If you ARE interested in this project, please call and bug Derrick at Corksport at 1-503-252-5700. Dont forget to tell him that 'Kris-from-Canada' sent you!
No worries,
Kris

Just wanted to clarify a few things

K Dawg ONE - Just wanted to make sure that everyone knows that these hoods will not have the washer nozzles pre-drilled.

Once CS gives us a call to make arrangements, you guys can call CS to make your own arrangements for payment etc.

what sort of time frame are we looking at for this? ..
How much time do we have to put in?

I didnt know all 2gens had the same hood. I thought they did, but, Derrick kinda made me think they didnt. Well, thats good...bigger market. Anyways, im guessing for timline, is whenevr we can get 10 people. Right now, id like to have one, Patrick wants one, id IDEALY like CS to get 5, and then we'd only need 3 more...

Bruce95fmla May-23rd-2003 04:03 PM

not to complain , but I am thinking in my head ,, damn and I am collecting all these turbo goodies ....
I can be put down as a possible, but I am really not sure ...
I will try and put something up on my Website pointing to ur email and also this link on my site ...

protegeboy78 May-28th-2003 04:23 PM

i am extremely interested.... it will take a couple of months though to raise the money since i'm not getting much work right now... will they drill holes for nozzles for a little extra? or do we have to do it ourselves or have someone? also will they latch with the stock latch? or do we have to use hood pins?

Calibur May-28th-2003 09:12 PM

LOL...when I talked to him yesterday (Monday) I actually did mention "Bruce, the guy with the red JDM 95 from Protegeclub." He knew who you were...

Anyways, Derrick called last week and wasnt able to talk to the guy he needed to so he said he was gonna call later on yesterday (was only noon PST, 4 EST or so here).
Thats all I know for now!

Kris

Bruce95fmla June-3rd-2003 04:26 PM

iON Performance June-13th-2003 05:31 PM

Update -

As of yet, we have not been contacted by CS about the hoods.

We will not make them unless there are at least 10 guys who are willing to put down a 50% non-refundable deposit on them.

Our time would be better spent doing R&D on go-fast parts, hence unless you guys are actually serious, and have the backing from CS, we will not make them.

protegeboy78 June-14th-2003 08:13 AM

well since in a week or two i have to pay for my jspec bumper it will take about a month but i can have the down payment for the cf hood by then and another 2-4 weeks i should be able to have the rest.... would that possibly work?

Are there pictures anywhere of the underside of a hood (I understand one hasn't been made as of yet for the Protege, but a pic of another hood would do). I'm interested in seeing the underside bracing, hinge mounting, latch assembly, and prop rod provisions. Also, what sort of time frame are we talking here? I understand deposits will be taken as soon as the minimum order of ten is fulfilled, but how long after that until the hoods are delivered? And do I understand the pricing correctly - $650CAN+$100USD shipping. Thanks...

Bruce95fmla June-23rd-2003 09:53 AM

what do you want to see, the undersid of a factory hook or the underside of a CF hood...

If it is a CF hood then you would have to refer to one of the 3rd gen guys , because they ION also made CF hoods for the 3rd gens ...

I think everything would be of high quality though

General info

Please note that the prices on shipping quoted are for shipping to 1 location only. If there are 8 different locations to which the hoods are being shipped to, each hood will cost $150US for shipping.

As well, we will require someone to send in a stock hood which is totally straight, no dents or paint chips

what are your thoughts on the amount of people we have gathered so far

iON Performance June-23rd-2003 04:15 PM

Bruce95fmla - well there's nothing really to think, however there hopefully is only 1 person co-ordinating the payments and all the address of the people involved.

Hopefully things will go as planned for you guys and we'll be able to make the hood.

Well , I can co-ordinate the addresses and everything ,
But I would figure that you would have a paypal account that people could send all the money to.....
Bruce

iON Performance June-23rd-2003 08:50 PM

Bruce95fmla - yes we do. If payments are made in USD, then a 7% equalization charge is added. If paid in CAD then 5% is added for the transaction charges.

Please sign up here:
http://www.protegeclub.com/forum/sho...threadid=27244

bigchrissays June-24th-2003 11:40 AM

iON Performance - so the price of the blue weave cf would be around 550usd?

iON Performance June-24th-2003 11:50 AM

bigchrissays - no it's not ~$550US, it's ~$611US ($825CAD). The initial post is wrong for the colored CF/Kevlar. It's $75CAD more then the V-weave, not then the regular CF hood. (ie: $175CAD more then the regular CF)

Prototender June-24th-2003 01:25 PM

so it would be approximately 306 american on the 15th of jul. right?

Before we go any further with this .. How about we get this pricing down pact...

Just fill in this below and I can put it in the Sign up ....

PRICES:
Regular Carbon Fiber=
Colored Carbon Fiber=
V-weave(if applicable)=

Shipping to be Approx. 150+ ... I will collect all addresses and forward them to you , so that you can determine this more accurately , but we can use that figure as a hypothetical figure...

To be honest I rather keep this simple but if it not a problem for you then cool ...
Also why do you charge me or other buyers to send you money ..
Unless it was paypal that your using , I can understand that , due to paypal charging you..
If you use paypal then money can be changed over into CAD currency from the start and would save you the problems..

Once you determine what transaction method you want to use then I will post that up on the sign up link..
I think I would prefer paypal ..
Thanks
Bruce

iON Performance June-24th-2003 02:28 PM

Bruce95fmla - here's the info you want:

PRICES: (not that this is for those who are serious about being the first 10)

Regular Carbon Fiber= $650CAD MO ($488.72US), Cashier's cheque. $682.50CAD via Paypal ($513.16US)

Colored Carbon Fiber /Kevlar (Blue, Red, Yellow, Orange) = $825CAD MO, Cashier's cheque ($620.30US).
$866.25CAD via Paypal ($651.32US).

V-weave(if applicable)= N/A

If we're paid in Canadian currency through Paypal, they still charge us 5%. This is a transaction charge that can't be avoided unfortunately.

Please note that the deposits are 50% of the cost of the hoods. Shipping is not counted in for the deposit. These are non-refundable. So if you're committed you're commited.

Bruce95fmla June-24th-2003 02:44 PM

thanks , I updated the other listing.
