They need 10 buyers. I think the hood is the same for the P5 as the sedan ES right?

You are correct, the >=01 Proteges (ES, LX, MP3, Pro5) all share the same hood. Now, the 99-00 doesn't; the headlights were changed ever so slightly.

How much are the hoods going to run? $$$$

any pictures?

Anyone have pictures of the hood on a protege?
I too am curious about the cost.....:D

I think Jeremy was trying to organize a group buy of at least six people for carbon fiber hoods from Tri Point engineering for the '99-'00 Protege. The hood is slightly different for the '01. The price target was $450.

Now I've heard that Fiber Images is going to produce a carbon fiber hood for all '01+ Proteges. If you haven't seen there web site, you should check it out. Their videos on the durability of their hoods are awesome. http://www.fiberimages.com/main.htm

alright, other than looks, what's special about a cf hood? Is it just the looks and light weight?

Eric F Oct 6, 2001 07:51 PM

For me, it's the light weight. If and when I get one, I'll paint it the same color as the rest of the car. You'd be surprised how much weight a carbon fiber hood can cut from the front end of a front wheel drive car, where it counts the most.

Makaveli Oct 6, 2001 07:59 PM

On a front wheel drive, wouldn't it be better to have more weight in the front as opposed to the weight in the back due to grip, more mass pushing down on the tires = more friction??? not sure.....

Eric F Oct 6, 2001 08:06 PM

It depends on what you're after. In the snow, or at the dragstrip, more weight on the drive wheels is beneficial. For handling and braking, getting the car closer to 50/50 is better.

Carbon Fiber Hood

The hood I've heard about is through MHP, and they said about $500 plus shipping. I'm not sure who is making it for them...

StuttersC Oct 7, 2001 07:12 AM

I sent back an e-mail asking how they are making it, so hopefully they'll be straight up about it and tell me if it's all carbon fiber or fiber glass.

Thanks for the info

Eric F Oct 7, 2001 11:47 AM

Excuse my igornace, but who is MHP? Which model year are they making the hood for? If you haven't looked at the strength videos for Fiber Images' carbon fiber hoods, you've gotta check 'em out. http://www.fiberimages.com/main.htm. This is why I want one of their hoods. I hate to imagine what my stock hood would look like after all that.

RE:Who is MHP?

MHP = Mad House Productions @ www.mhptuning.com

They are thinking about making them for the Pro5 and MP3, given enough interest.
