oh I understand.....you were POINTING to the power wires.....you didn't mean that was the power wire....gotcha! and I assumed that the SPEAKER label was exactly that....a label for the wire....

another source for that REVERSE harness is to find a Protege in a junk yard that is a 2001 or up.....and snip off its plug and harness.....just a thought.

I came across some interesting speakers made by Blaupunkt. They are dual voice coil 6x9s.

I thought these might be nice to add a little bass since I am not getting a subwoofer. They are a little more than I wanted to spend, plus I would have to get a 2-channel amp to power the low voice coil. However, I found a Power Acoustik (are their amps any good?) Sterling 70x2 amp for $60.

What do you guys think?

I have to toss a couple of pennies of thought here.
You have gotten some great advice in this string and I would suggest just a single refinement. Other folks should be able to fill in the detail of it.
Rather than just plug in the remote on wire to a hot wire of the car, you can build a simple relay and splice into one of the speaker wires coming out of the headunit. When you turn on the headunit the speaker wires will have current, the current will trigger the relay, which will switch on the amp. This will save the amp from being on all the time, and sometimes you can hear whine when the amp is on without a headunit.
Lastly, maybe it is just me, but when folks say real SQ, real is serious stuff that can cost thousands of dollars, and cost a pretty penny. You can build a very good SQ system off of the stock head unit. I did one. I have replaced the headunit since, and sold the car when I got the Mazdaspeed, but it was a fine system based on the stock headunit.
The headunit is a signal source, and honestly a CD player has much higher tolerences than humans can hear. The difference you get in an aftermarket unit will be features, such as tone controls, but the stock unit is surprisingly good in this regard.
If you are building to compete, then consider a new headunit, but for what you are considering, your stock headunit will do fine.
Good Luck!
