Argh My 6.5s are hitting against my door panel!
 

Anyone else ever had this problem?

Absolutely - ruined my first pair of Infinity's that way.

You need to trim off the "ring" inside the door panel, just behind the "speaker grille" part.

You can use a knife, just be careful. Also know that if you bend this flange too much, you might make marks on the outside of the panel that will be seen! When trimming mine (with the wrong tools), I broke off one section by bending the piece back and forth until it snapped off. Well, it also slightly bent the outside grille portion, and gave it that "white-ish" color that bent plastic gets. Ugh.

I then used a Dremel and small cutoff wheel - worked great. Just be careful whatever method you use.

Don't know what your adapter plates (from 5x7 to 6.5") are made of, but I found that 1/2" material is about as thick as you want to go - using 3/4" can cause speaker contact with the door panel.

Pull the panel and trim that "ring" - should solve your problem.

I don't know how effective this is, but I just used the acoustic baffles from Crutchfield. I didn't mess with getting a mounting trim because there wasn't much area around the speaker left from putting it in. It's protected against moisture because of the baffle, but otherwise, I did not use a trim plate. I did use a dremel to widen the hole a bit on each door. They seem to be working okay for me.

Yo, I already trimed the plastic around the speaker part of the door panel...I would have never guessed that Diamond 6.5s would have that much excursion. Maybe i can bend the metal on the door back so the speaker will be deeper into the door?

At this point it sounds like my speaker is busted (which is isnt) when it hits the panel...blap blap blap best describes the sound it makes....of course i could turn it down but.....who wants to do that, lol.

Oh ya I am using 3/4 MDF rings...maybe i could sand the rings down some? It would take a hell of alot of sanding though...hehe

There's your problem. Re-make your rings using 1/2" material, and you should be fine.

doh...recommend me some things that are 1/2 inch or less that wont crack in half like a cracker.

You can predrill holes so that the wood won't crack on you when you mount it to the metal of your car.

I used 1/2" MDF for my adapter plates. As long as you pre-drill, it'll be fine. You can also use solid wood, or plywood - just pre-drill.

Also, be sure to seal the MDF with something - like polyurethane, or even exterior house paint. This will help stop the MDF from absorbing moisture (same thing if you use plywood or solid wood also).

Well i fixed my problem...

I just bent back the metal on the speaker hole, and now no more blap blap...

ah, the resourcefulness of the frustrated.. welcome to the club.. seems to be the way i go about something when it comes to my car :) good job killing the noise
