Alternator Vs. Amps
 

right now i run a 750W RMS system in my car, i was wondering if that would be too hard on the alternator? should i get a beefier one? how much can the stock alt. handle does anyone know?

All the 2 litre Protege's come with an 80 amp/hr alternator. To figure out the load, add up all of the accessories and subtract from 80. Whatever's left is the juice for your system. To figure out how much power you need for your system. Add up the amp. rating from you amplifiers, that's how much power you need to run your music without draining the battery.

Keep in mind though, that these numbers aren't static: the system will draw more power the more the accessories are going (eg. a/c, fan, stereo, windows, lights, etc.) In addition, we don't know where the 2 litre Proteges make that 80 amps, is it at idle or under power (eg. around 3000 RPM)?

Also, how do you usually play your music? Your amps won't draw the full ampere rating unless they are at max. power.

dru is right on here. The alernator is standard size, not high output. If you are not running air, lights, and try to rattle your fillings, you will be fine with the stock alternator. In new cars you can step into warrenty issues really fast by installing an aftermarket amp that produces much higher amp output...

Then you'll be just fine, man. I run about 700 watts myself in my system, and I only get dimming lights when the volume is cranked up pretty high - and even then, it's only very slight, and not enough to bother trying to fix - especially with an expensive HO alternator.

I'm pretty impressed with having an 80 amp alt in our cars - I was expecting like a 65 or so. 80 is not bad at all - oh, and the alt seems to put out decent power at idle, too, because my dimming is only slightly worse at idle than it is with the engine revving 3000 RPM+

Don't waste your money on an alternator - use it to buy 700 more watts of power (well, then maybe you'll need the HO alt - what a quandry, huh?) :):):)

Sounds like you fine for power but if you want to be safe a motorsport 200 amp alternator can be placed in the Protege.
