The new-generation MINI, to be launched in 2007, will come in no less than six bodystyles, according to American website Edmunds.com, which claims to have obtained "leaked documents." Many of these have been rumoured already, though the plan is said to confirm the revival of the Clubman and Mini Moke names.

The MINI will come with two wheelbase lengths. The short-wheelbase will underpin the conventional three-door hatchback and soft-top cabriolet, direct replacement models for the MINI variants currently offered, as well as a roadster with a removable hard top roof. The long-wheelbase will be used for a five-door Clubman estate, which will have rear-hinged rear doors (similar to those of the Mazda RX-8) and a van-style pair of back doors rather than a tailgate. There will also be a three-door tailgated wagon, with a highly-flexible cargo space, and a little pick-up, which will be badged MINI Moke.

The styling of the all-new MINI is thought to remain very close to that of the current model, with no radical changes. However, an all-new range of engines will be used: BMW's own four-cylinder petrol units developed and built in Hams Hall, England, and Peugeot diesels instead of the Toyota unit currently used. Edmunds.com says the new three-door and cabriolet range is expected to make its debut at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show (even though we've seen prototypes on the road), with Clubman versions coming a year later, and the further new variants to follow after that.

In the meantime, MINI is to offer a lightweight Cooper S as a last hurrah for the outgoing Mk1 range. This will probably be announced at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month. According to enthusiast-run website mini2.com, as few as 2000 of these could be made, and they will have unique carbonfibre panels, a unique interior with racing-style seats, Perspex rather than glass windows, and lighter door casings, side panels and dashboards to reduce overall weight by around 15percent. Power could be hiked to a similar output to the tuned John Cooper Works models (210bhp), and suspension and brake modifications are likely. (Edmunds.com/mini2.com).
