In the ’80s it was hip to be square, and in the 21st century it’s cool to be Cube. Nissan’s Cube and Cube Cubic are popular in Japan, but once the next-generation model arrives, Nissan may test the Cube’s drawing power in the United States against the likes of Scion’s xB.

Cube features some quirky design elements, such as an asymmetrical wraparound rear glass and a front benchseat. Powered by either a 1.4-liter, 97-hp four-cylinder or a 1.5-liter, 109-hp four, the Cube is no performance machine. But both models are very fuel-efficient, and the Cube can be outfitted with optional e-4wd. With the system, when front wheelslip is detected, two electric motors powering the rear wheels spring into action.

The slightly bigger Cube Cubic, with its third row of seats, is the perfect choice for those looking for more space, and the clever folding seats allow for impressive loading capacity.

Prices in Japan start at $12,400 for the base 1.4 2wd Cube and top out at $16,300 for the 1.5 Cubic with lots of neat options available like an air conditioning ionizer. As for when we’ll see it here, right now Nissan says there are no “officially announced plans” to bring the Cube to the United States.
