It can be done without a spring compressor, but the compressor is the safer way to go if you aren't very experienced working on cars. After jacking up each end of the car, placing it on jack stands, and removing the wheels, I placed the floor jack under the suspension and removed the center bolt from the strut rod. You can slowly lower the floor jack to release the spring tension, and then remove all seperated parts. Assembling the struts with the new Eibachs is easy, since the rear springs are shorter than the rear strut travel, everything can be held in place while the center bolt is hand tightened. The front spring needs about a half inch of compression to install the center bolt, which can be acheived by pushing the upper spring seat down by hand. I would recommend wire or zip tying the rear spring upper and lower seats to the spring to keep everything in place after you install the struts.
