Rear Spring Noise...Help Me!
 

Hey all. I have B&G springs on my '01 ES. The car looks great, but on every friggin bump, the rear springs make a loud ass clanking noise. I know for a fact it is the dead coils on the top hitting against eachother. I am ready to install a different set and I am wondering if anyone has heard the noise with Eibach's or H&R's. I know on the H&R's, the dead coils are on the bottom of the rear spring. How about the Eibach's? Please help!!!

my h&r's do the same thing. gets kind of annoying when i leave the back seats down to listen to the stereo. i'll survive though. i wish there was a way to fix it.

I have Eibachs installed on my P5 and the passenger side rear sqeaks REALLY loud over small bumps in the road. Anyone else have this or know how to fix it?

I've heard of people fixing the "dead" coil clank on other cars by cutting short lengths of a small rubber hose, such as a fuel line, then slitting the pieces down one side, jacking the car up, and slipping them over the "dead" coils to hold them apart when the car is lowered back onto the ground. I think that 3-4 small pieces of hose per coil should do the trick.

I had Eibachs installed in my P5 in January. It took four trips back to the dealer and some interesting rigging to nearly eliminate the problem.
On my car it was the top retaining piece on the the shock tower on the driver's side squeaking. Eventually the mechanic buffed the crap out of the retaining piece and flipped it upside-down. Very little noise now but it hasn't gone away completely.

oh shit...i have the same noise on my mp3 with the intrax...u think the springs are just too long...i hear it bad on one side and the other side is a lil softer....any suggestions??/

Try this out...

Goto your local auto supply store and get some silicone lubricant spray. Should look like a big bottle of WD-40 with the little stray spray nozzle.

Now there is this little black washer up in your strut mount. Lube this up very nice. That should take car of your squeaks. For the back you have to jack your car up, for the front you can spray into one of the four small holes on the top of the strut mount in your engine compartment. I have to do this about once a week.

As for the clanking...maybe your bumpstops? Or maybe your car is trying to tell you that it doesn't like being lowered :)

I will try the lubricant, but it's not a squeaking noise that I have. It is actually metal hitting metal. I jacked my car up and looked at the springs, all the red paint is chipped off where the springs are hitting. So i figure it is the coils hitting against eachother. I will try getting rubber hose and put them between the coils. Is there a really strong kind of hose I should use? I will go to home depot tomorrow and see what I can get. I'm ready to drive down to B&G's distribution center in San Diego and shove that springs up their asses! Thanks in advance...

Anyone find it interesting that all these problems seem to be with the rear springs only? I had Eibach springs installed for almost a year with no problems or sounds at all. The travel of the rear Protege struts is quite long, enough so that when installing just about any lowering springs other than stock MP3 or Racing Beat springs, the springs are shorter than the rear struts travel. This means the rear springs fit loosely on the rear strut when assembled. This can easily cause the springs to make noise due to being able move around on their seats. Worse case being one or both ends of the spring jumping off of the seats and contacting metal, as you describe. I fixed this by drilling a couple of small holes in the upper and lower spring seats, and using strong zip ties to hold each end of the spring securely to it's seat.

I actually fixed the noise by getting a vinyl tube with 1/2" Inside Diameter and slit it on the side. I then put a little piece about 2 inches long between the coils that were hitting and the noise is gone, completely! So no more complaints from me! I just wonder how long it will last. I recommend anyone with B&G, H&R, and Intrax springs to do this as they all seem to have the same problem. Hope it works for everyone!

Now that I think about it, someone else mentioned that fix working before for one of those brands of springs. I never had that problem with the Eibachs, but I still think tying the springs to the seats is a good idea.
