R1 coilover Group Purchase
 

I have contacted a large North American distributor located in Niagara Falls Canada on a possible group buy on R1' coilovers. The price is a rough one until we start getting numbers on how many people would like to purchase a set. Let me know if you are interested my e-mail at cabral_frank@hotmail.com. These are for the Protege 5. The rough price is $210 Canadian or $ 134 USD. The price will be finalized and will be less once we get an idea as to how many sets we are looking at. What are R1 coilovers?

they are coilovers........R1 is the brand name............
as far as I know R1 makes some pretty good products, but I cannot comment on the coilovers for a 3rd gen Protege as I own a 1st gen myself........

now if your question is ....'what are coilovers in general, then I'd suggest you do a search.............there is a lot of info on that on this forum........

The R1's are a good product and are of great quality. I have seen them installed on a P5 and it gives a good even drop. The ride quality is a slight bit stiffer than stock but expected when dealing with most suspension mods. I will post pics of the product A.S.A.P. I am planning on purchasing them for my 02 third gen P5 within the next few weeks. They are adjustable from factory ride height to -3.5". As soon as I get the pics or any other tech info on the coilover kit I will let everyone know.

I put R1 coilovers on my wifes Z24 and they freakin suck! The actual springs are very small, im talking less than half the size of the stock springs. It dropped the Z very low, i admit it looked good, but i never wanted to ride in it! Any bump and you would fly up and hit the roof! I bought Eibachs 2 days ago for the Z and im going to install them tomorrow. But thats just my opinion, just letting you guys know before you make your decisions. Peace!

And another thing, why do you think there so cheap? The springs are small, I paid $100 for them, and regret it all the way!!!!!!

I don't know of this brand but I can speak for a threaded sleeve, slip over style coilover. This follows the same principles of the Ground Control coilover.

The questions to ask are the diameter, length, and spring rates of the springs they use. Ground Control happens to use the most renown spring maker, Eibach.

However, even with Ground Controls there is a certain deal of discomfort when changing over to this. The problem begins simply by the fact that you are switching from a typical 4" O.D. PROGRESSIVE SPRING to a 2.5" or smaller LINEAR spring.

In doing so, all those little bumps can result in a more significant impact on the vehicle. I'm trying to be as lamen as possible so please forgive my lack in detail. THe most annoying experience, even with good coilovers, is the inherent plates evenly spaced out on the freeway. With a linear spring it creates a resonance and you just feel like you're skipping along. The other downside is that you will most likely loose a lot of suspension travel resulting in premature strut failure or you'll be riding on bump stops.

Just as information to what these are. Hope I've helped explain. Other similar styles would be universal MAXSPEED, Ground Control, or Skunk2's setup. This is a good price regardless so enjoy. Remember the Pros and Cons, and what specs to look for. Then compare all the brands.

This purchase may not be for everyone and people may have had there own experiences. I am just trying to help out anyone who has been interested in suspension modifications. I personaly feel this is a good product. I had a 95 Cavalier and had a similar product line of coilover installed on the vehicle and enjoyed them. You may run into some problems whe passing certain thresholds on how far you lower the vehicle, remember the suspension is designed with a calculated amount of travel. Just trying to help anyone out who is interested. Thanks for any help given with tech info and all coments are welcomed!

can you use these with the stock springs?...can you lower it an 1" with the coilovers?

The coilover comes with the spring and complete perch asssembly. You can lower your car from stock height to -4". But the group buy is not going through because no one showed interest. E-mail me directly at cabral_frank@hotmail.com and I can send you info on how you might be able to still by the coilover kit if you want.

what are the spring rates (i.e. progressive, or linear?)...i'm not all that familiar with R1 as a manufacturer (i'm a crx racer so i know nuespeed, eibach, tein, etc.) Can you give me a link to a site that has specs on the R1 coilovers? Such as pro vs lin rates, what is the procedure to lower/raise the spring perch, etc. thanks (i'd email you but this may interest others)
