Question About Rear Brakes Squeaking
 

OK, so I replaced my pads and rotors with Powerslot slotted rotors, Hawk HPS pads in the front and OEM pads in the rear. Now, after a proper bedding in, the rear brakes squeak when I pull away from a stop. It goes away fairly quickly, but comes back every time I come to a complete stop for more than a few seconds. It doesn't sound like worn pad squeaking, it's a little "softer". It seems like the pads are not separating when I'm letting off the brake. The slides were well lubed, everything else seems fine. I'm wondering if this is due to the slotted rotors. I obviously didn't have this problem with the original rotors. Any help or suggestions? Or is this normal and I should forget about it?

And, geez, I forgot to say this is on an '02 P5.

My first suggestion is to check that all the pad hardware clears the rotors.

All disk brakes inherently drag a little, no matter what, and this noise can sometimes be caused by the pads dragging across the rotors. However, it would be unusual for this to happen when you're using brand new rotors. Try making several high-speed stops in a row- get the brakes nice and stinking hot- sometimes this will change the wear pattern and eliminate the noise. [BTW don't try this until you've driven your new pads gently for a couple hundred miles, doing this with brand-new pads my glaze them.] If this doesn't take care of the problem, try lubricating the backs of the pads with Molykote or slathering them with anti-squeal compound.

Now I feel like an idiot. I would have sworn the sounds were coming from the rear, but this afternoon I did the "head out the window like a dog trick" and it turns the squeaks are coming from the fronts. So now I'll go do the anti-squeak and lube on the fronts (had already been done on the rear) Another concern that came up was that it was doing it in a hard (lefthand) corner as if the caliper was shifting in the corners. For all I know, that may be normal, but these Hawk pads are squeaky things and that may be exacerbating the problem. I'll do the work and give an update. Btw, everything looks ok, and I KNOW that the pads and clips were installed correctly, it was a bitch and a tight fit so that's why I made sure everything fit right.
