Installing springs hard?
 

I've got a p5 and am looking at some eibach pro-kit springs, just wanna know what is involved in installation... (i found someone with a spring compresser) and my stupid local speed shop said it costs 150$ for labor.... just curious how much is involved, should i try, etc.

I've known some pretty stupid people that could do it.

There's not a ton of work, give it a shot I say.

Get a spring compressor and a set of hand tools and be ready to get dirty. It is a pretty easy job, me and my friend did it in about 1hour and a half, I worked on one side while he worked on the other. just be careful when you decompress the spring it can bounce pretty far.

By the way, I'm pretty sure you can borrow spring compressors from pep boys... give them a $50 deposit or so... return it after the weekend, get your $50 back :D

I rented my spring compressor from Auto Zone. Gave it back and got my money back.:)

As for the install, you should definately do it yourself. It'll save you money and you'll learn something new. Go for it!

Actually, I did it myself and had no clue what the hell I was doing! I didn't even use a compressor. All I did was unbolt the strut from the bottom down, moved the brake line out of the way, then while holding onto the strut from the bottom, I just unbolted it from the car. It didn't even bounce as hard as I thought it would. To put it back on, I just did the reverse. I don't know how the hell I did it w/o f-ing anything up, but I did it and I've go no problems at all. My alignment was only off like 1-2 degrees in the back, but that was it!

just save yourself the trouble and just use a spring compressor.

not using a spring compressor is a good way to dent either your face or your car....

those things support the weight of your car.. pretty stiff... if your not gonna use a compressor use a long pole

Whatever you do use a spring compressor. And for those of you who didn't use one, don't post it here, we don't need people giving out advice that could seriously injure others. It is very unsafe to do the install without a spring compressor. Word of advice, on my car the endlinks were the hardest part of the install, they were severely rusted shut and my car has only 30,000 miles. Use some WD-40 before you do the install, to loosen them up.
