Clicks from shifter when braking
 

I have Mazda Protege5 2003. I recently noticed that when shifter is in P and I press the brakes, I hear clicks from the shifter. Is this normal?

I just bought a 2003 p5 (currently has 400 miles on it) and it clicks too on me and I am thinking about bringing it back to the dealer.

That click that you hear is the transmission saftey switch. It is on all automatic cars and prevents you from shifting it into gear without the brake pedal pressed. THere is a little gate litterally to the right of the "P" which once you activate the brake switch (when you depress the brake pedal), this gate opens via some sort of actuator and allows the shifter to go into R - N - D -. Mine clicks so loud that I can hear it over the stereo. I doubt it is supposed to be so audible but since someone else is having this same issue I feel a little more towards the fact that it is a Mazda engineering flaw.

Dont get me wrong, I like the car a lot but find this clicking to be rather stupid for a brand new car (not even 2 weeks old)!!!

what you are hearing is the soleniod pulling the tricker, which locks and release the shift lever as described by lxpony. The noise could be the soleniod itself. Or just the tricker hitting the top and bottom when moved. You'll see it when you pop the cover open. If it's the soleniod, have the dealership replace it. if it's the tricker hitting something, put some soft thin rubber at the spot. make sure the rubber is not too thick, or it won't lock or release the lever. hope this helps...
