ABS disabling (fuse? jumper?)
 

Well, I have looked through the shop manual but didn't find anything that said here is the jumper that controls the ABS sytem .. pull it to disable ABS ;)
Just a lot of pinouts and where to hook up diagnostic equipment, etc, etc.

Does anyone know if there is a jumper I can pull or something to do electronically to disable ABS? Ideally it would be sweet to hook up that dead button to a switch that would turn abs on/off.

(For Solo 2 I am allowed to disable ABS electronically, but not mechanically...)

Uhh why would you want to do this? Just curious.

ABS often creates problems at the autocross track. Carmakers often seem to assume that regular sedans are not going to be raced, and program the ABS mostly to promote stability, not enhance performance.

Some cars have ABS programming that basically releases the brakes at the first little hint of lockup, making threshold braking impossible (Dodge Neon, old Chevy Caprice- ask a cop about this). Other ABS systems can't handle it when a FWD car lifts the inside rear wheel under trail braking (old Sentra SE-R, new Celica GT-S). ABS works well on some cars, but many autocrossers prefer to disconnect it.

BTW after my "pull the fuse" post, something occured to me. I think all BJ Proteges use Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) as part of the ABS system. If this is the case, pulling the fuse won't work because EBD eliminates the brake proportioning valve, and the front/rear brake bias will be all screwed up with the ABS disabled. If the car has EBD, leave the ABS on.

Yeah the P5 does have EBD.. shucks.
Too bad ABS isn't an option on the Canadian models.

Chris is right about ABS. Many less expensive cars, like the Pro, have overly agressive ABS systems that also don't disengage very quickly. I can personally attest to the Protege ABS system suffering from both of these maladies. Don't get me wrong though, with stock tires and standard driving, the Protege's ABS is still a benefit, especially on slippery surfaces.

The place I like the Proteges ABS system the least is when braking on uneven pavement. The system often engages under these conditions even though it isn't need. Also, once the ABS engages, it takes longer than it should to disengage under these conditions also.

I never had ABS kick in on autocross or race track. Maybe you should use gas pedal more than brake pedal :wee:

I didn't say that it does engange on me while racing, just inquiring if it is possible to disable it. Because don't the Miatas come with a switch for ABS on/off?
There's a race tomorrow at Mosport (solo2) so I'll let you know if ABS actually does come into play in the real world ;)

Uhh, as far as I'm aware, the Canadian P5 brochure indicates ABS is standard.

No. The 99+ models have a switch that turns the passenger airbag on and off, but I'm not aware of any cars with a stock ABS on/off switch.

Ditto for that grey matter between your ears.

I think he meant that you cannot choose to have ABS or not as it is standard on every single P5.

Guys to disable ABS on your pro do this. I found out after installing my H&R springs that my abs warning light came on. The ABS system was disengaged. So normal braking. The problem was that one of my rear wheel abs sensor got disconnected. As soon as the ECU saw that it disabled the ABS system. So by disconnection any wheel abs sensor the abs will be turned off.
