WOW! Engine Mounts.....

I had my car in at the shop the other day and while it was lifted up we noticed that it the exhaust piping seemed kinda low and the lower engine mounts weren't centered, so we lowered it and looked under the hood at the mounts and my big mount on the passenger side has a huuuuge crack in it. definitely needs replacing! are there any good companies that make engine mounts for a 99 pro ES, 1.8L? i really can't wait to replace those puppies.

AWR makes urethane replacements for the No. 1 (behind the engine) and No. 2 (in front of the engine) mounts, and Kartboy is working on a kit for the same two. There is currently no aftermarket replacement for the No. 3 mount, which is the one you broke; 2.0L owners can use the No. 3 mount from the MSP, but it doesn't fit the 1.8L. :( Hopefully, someone will make an aftermarket No. 3 mount soon because it seems to be the 2nd easiest one to break, after the No. 2 mount. Right now, the only option is to buy an OEM replacement.

The aftermarket urethane No. 1 and 2 mounts are much stiffer than the stock ones and are MUCH harder to break, but some folks on this forum have complained about negative effects on drivability and NVH. The mounts will greatly increase vibration at idle and make the car harder to shift smoothly. If you're picky about this sort of thing, you might want to consider using new factory mounts and replacing them periodically.

Speaking of the No. 2 mount, here's some info I discovered....

Early 99 Proteges use a wimpy No. 2 mount that has been redesigned. This may have caused the breakage of your No. 3 mount because engine mounts often have a "ripple effect"- break one and it puts more stress on the other ones, breaking them too. :(

Good luck! :D
