Where does it come from?

where does the extra 10Hp in the mp3 come from isn't the motor in the pr5 the same why are we robbed the hp if is is the same motor?

I believe it's the advanced timing in the MP3's ECU that gained the extra 10hp.....

admins please step in if this is incorrect...

you hit the nail on the head.... BINGO!!

thats where it comes from.

proman June-26th-2002 04:19 PM

and how would one go about adjusting the timing on the same engines?

zeriak June-26th-2002 04:24 PM

Too good to be true?

I saw some kind of thing on ebay that said that it would fool the temp sensor into thinking that the engine was cold, advancing the timing 2 to 3 degrees essentially adding ~10hp. Does this sound right to you? The bid started at $10 and they were going to throw in instructions on how to modify your trunk to go up and flip down with hardware store parts for the "low-rider trunk" and some other info. Link below.

Oh, and also besides the advanced timing, doesn't the MP3 motor have different cams? Or is that the J-Spec engine I'm thinking about? I think the MP3 also has a different exhaust that yields a bit more HP too. Correct me if I'm wrong please. Thanks.

Run a search for that. It has been discussed in length before. Bottom line: it doesn't work!

Our timing is set for 87 octane fuel. The MP3's timing is set for premium fuel, which requires advanced timing.

Here, I found it for you: IAT Mod

Thanks. Saved myself 10 bucks! Anyhow, so what you are saying is that if you can advance the timing and fuel map using an aftermarket ECU, you can yield about 10 more ponies?

Basically. However, it's an awfully expensive mod for what you get! A decent cold air intake and exhaust combined should get you pretty much the same gains and better throttle response to boot! The same thing goes for light weight flywheels and underdrive pullies. There are cheaper piggy-back systems that can alter your timing and fuel map... however, the stock ECU still overrides it at wide open throttle (WOT).
