yah, if you consider our pro5's to like a factory civic, the civic
understeers like crap while the pro5 doesnt show any sign of squeeling at the same speed. a tad bit of roll, but with some cheep swaybars, that can be easily dialed out. :D (my next perf mod). this car does handle exceptionally well. |

p5 is the best in it's economy class. it's a great handling, nimble, v.reliable and great looking car...and it's affordable. if it had more hp then you would dish out extra $$$$$$ and the it wouldnt be an economy car anymore.
lots of more expensive cars dont even come close to p5's reliablity, quality and handling prowess. if you want hp go get an suv with 200hp and up. pr5 is a gem! |
Originally posted by kenchan i chose protege5 over vw golf 4dr wagons, focus 4dr wagons, saturn 4dr wagons, etc. etc. etc. because the pro5 is a great looking car with lots of usable goodies included. :D this is the first time for me to buy a mazda, but i am really impressed with the packaging they do. all i would ask for in a car is in the car without additional options. :p it lacks power and torque vs my other cars, but for commuting and just plain fun driving, the pro5 kicks ass. i am very happy with my pro5. check out my www below to see a pict. :) |
i've had my protege for nearly a month now and love it, out of all the cars i test drove in its class, the spec V is the only one that i liked the handling/acclerating better than the pro. If i could have a second car it would be a spec v, but i haven't driven a MSP which would actually be equal to the msp versus a DX, i'd probably have the msp over the spec v :)

I own a 2002 Protege, and I also own a '93 RX-7. Now, if my memory serves me, the 3rd gen. RX-7 was, and still is, considered to be one of the best performing sports cars OF ALL TIME! It has one of the highest power to weight ratios of any streetable sports cars ever. And if you take it racing, stock, you are put in a class with Ferrari's, Lambo's, and Vipers! So don't tell me that Mazda is behind all the others when it comes to performance.
P.S. Mazda also happens to be THE ONLY Japanese manufacturer to ever win the 24 hours of Le Mans, not to mention an incredible string of consecutive IMSA GT championships! P.P.S I also love my Protege. |
3rd gen RX-7's kick ass. They are notorious for being rather "finicky" cars though. Hey, by the way, is your RX-7 silver and occasionally parked on the street? I always see one around my house, the thing is fuckin' beautiful (I see you're from Chicago too).
Anyway, the P5 is a wagon and I don't think it was meant to compete in the same class as the SRT4, SVT Focus, Civic Si, etc. Thats what they have the Mazdaspeed Protege for. |
Mazdaspeed will kick ass!
thats the thing ,if you want to race and win then mazda speed is designed for that. pro5 is good and fast but not designed for drag racing or beating mazdaspeed wannabees! |

Originally posted by mnkyboy I was looking at some 3rd Gen RX-7s on Ebays Auto site, most of them are automatic! Why would you want an automatic sports car? Am I missing something??? |
Originally posted by PseudoRealityX The 3rd gen RX-7 was never THAT fast in a straight line. And it doesn't have an overly impressive power to weight ratio. A Camaro or Firebird has a better power to weight ratio....for example. The 3rd gen RX-7 was made famous because of an amazing chassis, and the engineering behind it. Low polar moment, good suspension geometry....etc. |
0-60 mph in 4.9 sec stock from the factory isn't that fast? wow! what are you driving? And I believe you are incorrect in assuming a stock camaro has a better power to weight ratio. The R1 version weighs in at about 2700 lbs with 260 horses.
Mine is a Red R1 with 5 speed-of course! |
And even if you added 2lbs to the :camaro: for the mullet haircut, you'd still be at 11.54 lb/hp.
|
Actually, I was assuming the "rated" power instead of your "conservative" number. I wonder what the "conservative" number of the RX-7 is? Anyway, it doesn't really matter. What does matter is I would much rather drive an RX-7 than a Camaro, and I've owned 3 Firebirds in different flavors over the years. The two cars don't even compare. So, here's another statistic to munch on: an LS1 is 305 HP / 5.7 litres = 53 horser per litre; a rotary is 255 hp / 1.8 litres = 141 horses per litre. So an equally sized rotary would produce 803 horses!
Isn't this stuff fun? |
