what is that humming/whining sound in my new p5

Just purchased a 2003 P5 and love it! Only have 900 kms. on it so far but I have noticed a humming/whining noise that appears to be coming from under the hood. It definitely is not wind noise as this will happen when idling and rev the engine to around 1500 rpms. I can also hear it when driving when the revs are around 2000 - 2500. I can hear it when the radio is off or on and it is driving me crazzzzy!

Anyone else experiencing this noise?

Thanks for any input from p5 mama.

I have a whine only when cruising at over 2000rpm. This is some sort of normal resonating sound comming from the tranny I think Mazda has deemed it normal. (Thats assuming your noise is the same.)

"Hey, Mama."(he said in his best Elvis voice...)The only time I ever heard a noise like you've described, it was after I paid some hillbilly to install my stereo, and it wasn't grounded properly. It sounds like you've already ruled that out, though. :) If you haven't got a new amp or head unit installed, I'd go back to the dealer and have it dealt with under warranty. Good luck, andhttp://www.imagestation.com/picture/...e/fc39b815.gif to the club!

First time driving a four-banger? That buzzing sound you hear when you put your foot on the gas is your engine running.
:p

humming.whining sound in my new p5

Driven a "4-banger" for over 20 years, and never heard a noise like this. It almost sounds like excessive wind noise from under my hood which is impossible if you're not moving. It is very annoying and I can even hear it over my stereo. Just spoke with Mazda service and they said it could go away after the "breaking in" period. Hmmmm, we will see.

it may just be the restrictive air intake system (has like a volume of 10 gallons and a bunch of interconnecting pipes with all kinds of crap attached)
i just yanked all that off, now i have a filter box with a hole in the side and now the engine sounds goooooood

Whatever it is, it should not be so loud that you hear it even over your stereo, unless you're driving around in 1st gear all the time :-) In my experience engines do not make any additional noise during the break-in period, so the dealer was just being lazy. So basically, I vote for taking it into the dealer.

what is this sound!!

I got the same noise in my 2000 protege lx... the noise is the altenator charging. I asked a service manager at the mazda dealership i bough the car at and he said that 2000 and up altenators make this noice when they are charging.

This might be what you are experiencing!

Hope this helps!

Thanks all for your input. Sounds like I'm going to have to learn to live with this noise or turn up my stereo really loud. It really irritates me that this is considered a "normal noise" not to be concerned about. I certainly will talk to Mazda service again and let them know I'm not thrilled.

whining sound

I had the same noise coming from under the hood. the whining sound stopped after i checked the air intake clamps and made sure they where tight. one was loose and now the sound is gone!:p

hmm.. i can't remember if i ever had that.. but now all i hear is my stereo/muffler/engine/intake now..

so i guess if it bothers you just replace it with another sound :)

Would it be possible to go into the dealership and ask them to run one of their cars on the lot (same or close to your model) and show you that its a 'normal' sound? It sounds like an awful lot of noise if it's louder then your radio..

If they were unable to reproduce this "normal" sound on similar cars.. they might have to look at yours?

I don't know.. just a suggestion.

hmm.....it sucks finding out that the car u just bought the other day is making all kinds of noise. Well i bought mine last week. I have 880 miles on the clock but ever since i got the car i was already hearing this noise. When u start the car ( foot on the clutch all the way) i hear this noise that sounds like grinding gears or metal chunks on a bottle. but rite when i let go of my foot off the clutch the noise is gone and when i step in back on the clutch the noise is not there anymore i wonder wut it is. I hope its not a big deal i dont trust MAZDA that much id say i rate mazda 7 from 1-10 rating and honda, toyota, nissan 10! i got mazda cuz the protege 5 looks really nice and unique but when i pop the hood and saw the engine i was disappointed. I found out its a 626 engine in it and 626 engine sucks! but then again i got the 100,000 mile warranty so its all good!

Thanks Jasper5.0 - mama loves ya baby! You were right, one of the air intake clamps was loose, tightened it up and the sound is gone. I'm one happy mama!!
